The Woes of a Poet With Social Anxiety

Workshop

How do I break this icy wall

of equal parts anxiety and awkwardness

that seems to spring up each and every time

I look you in the eyes and find myself

lost in your smile, or the way your glasses

catch the light, or even when you dance

ever so subtly when a good song comes on.

How do I tell you how adorable

I find your laugh, and how much I want

to just bask in it. I could scream compliments

in my head all night long, but the second

I try to let them escape somehow

I freeze up, lost in my own overthinking

and my worries about coming on too strong.

So instead I'll do the next best thing

and work out all of these racing thoughts

and things I wish that I could say to you,

pin them down under all this messy ink,

and somehow work up enough courage

to say all of this to you

in my own special awkward way.
