This is much older than tiktok. Read On Walden Pond for a more historic view of how rich people can "live on the land" without income.

Someone has to pay the taxes, whether it's your or your family/friends.

To summarize for OP: Thoreau's mother did his laundry, and occasionally delivered meals to him, while he was writing Walden. The lot on which the cottage sat was owned by a family friend (Thoreau's mentor, Ralph Emerson), and the only rent asked in return was that Thoreau help clear the lot.

While he writes convincingly of the virtues of a solitary life, made on the strength of one's own abilities, the truth about Walden is that it's a book by a pampered arts student who is oblivious to the immense value his friends and family bring in supporting him, or at least wrote to an audience he could assume would ignore those details in favour of the myth of the loner genius.

Theoretically, you can find a state/county that has less property tax than others. You can build a minimalistic home that costs less property taxes than your standard size home. You could "live off the land" and produce things that you could sell to pay for said property taxes and whatever bills you incur. Having said that, it is a very simplistic life where you're going to physically toil yourself for your mere existence and sacrifice lots of conveniences of modern society.

Because they omit all the harsh reality on the internet. If it is something where people are living the dream, bet there's some BS they're not sharing about.

I think there's a saying not to covet another's spouse because you never know the hell that happens behind closed doors. Same thing. Grass isn't always greener.
