NOSLEEP IN-DEPTH: MODMAIL, REMOVALS AND REPOSTS
#MODMAIL, REMOVALS AND REPOSTS.
##USING MODMAIL. Modmail is direct messages between you, the user, and the moderators of a subreddit.
Moderators aren't Admin(istrator)s. Moderators are unpaid volunteers in charge of individual subreddits; Admins are paid employees in charge of Reddit as a whole. Contacting Mods isn't the same thing as contacting Admins. Please keep that in mind!
Mods often send users direct messages letting them know why their comment/post was removed (not deleted as Mods can't delete your comments/posts!) from their subreddit. Users can also send direct messages to the mods of a subreddit to ask questions, get clarification, etc.
Please respond to modmail messages directly, don't create a whole new message in response as that starts a new "thread" which gets confusing and makes more work for everyone. Please stick to one (1) message thread for a specific issue/topic by clicking "Reply"! If your message is about a removed post, be sure to include the link to the removed/non-visible post in question.
To send a modmail:
At the end of every subreddit's sidebar (under the "About" tab on mobile browser or ".../Community Info" on the app) is a box labeled "Moderators" which lists all moderators of the subreddit and features the option: "Message the Mods".
r/SolariaHues has a guide (with screencaps) about how to message the mods on old layout, new layout & mobile/app.
Alternatively, you can create a new direct message and make the recipient "r/[subreddit]" – without the quotation marks (" ") or square brackets ("[ ]"). E.G. r/nosleep
DON’T CONTACT MODERATORS OUTSIDE OF MODMAIL ABOUT SUBREDDIT ISSUES.
Please be kind and patient when messaging moderators; they're unpaid volunteers who aren't on Reddit 24/7/365 to answer your messages. Your message isn’t the only one they have to read and respond to so don't expect instant replies; don't spam them with message after message or get annoyed because they haven't responded as quickly as you'd like.
##ABOUT REMOVALS. On Reddit, having a comment or post removed simply means the content of the comment/post is hidden from general view. Only the original poster ("OP"), the subreddit Mods and Admins can see the content of the post; the general public see "[removed]" and a message box saying "Sorry, this post has been removed by the moderators of [subreddit]".
Removed content still exists because it's just hidden. Comments and posts can be edited to comply with the subreddit's rules and resubmitted for possible reapproval.
Only Moderators and Admins can remove comments/posts. Regular users can delete their own comment/post but can only downvote and/or report others.
Removals aren't personal.
On Reddit, only the OP and Admins have the power to delete (erase) comments/posts.
Deletion means the content no longer exists. It can't be edited because it's gone completely. Not even Admins can bring back deleted content.
IF YOUR COMMENT/POST IS REMOVED FROM A SUBREDDIT, IT'S ONLY HIDDEN FROM GENERAL VIEW AND YOU STILL HAVE ACCESS TO THE CONTENT OF IT.
IF YOU DELETE YOUR COMMENT/POST, IT'S GONE FOREVER. YOU'LL HAVE TO RE-WRITE IT IF YOU WANT IT BACK.
The number of upvotes and/or comments have nothing to do with whether a post is removed on NoSleep. Whether your post got 1, 10 or 10,000 upvotes is immaterial on NoSleep; if the story itself doesn't fit the rules, it gets removed. Upvotes and comments have never determined whether a story passes the rules or should stay up.
Sometimes posts get caught by the Spam filter and are hidden from general view; these posts may have the message: "Post is awaiting moderator approval. This post is currently awaiting approval by the moderators of [subreddit] before it can appear in the subreddit." OR: "Sorry, this post was removed by Reddit's spam filters. Reddit's automated bots frequently filter posts it thinks might be spam."
Posts containing a term (or multiple terms) which a subreddit considers bigoted are put in a queue for moderators to review manually. Your best course of action is to not use bigoted terms. If you use bigoted terms (anti-LGBT, racist, sexist, etc) in your story for any reason and your post doesn't show on NoSleep, politely message the mods with a link to the post; if they tell you to edit the post, do so and remove/replace the bigoted terms.
If your post is removed without an Autobot comment and you don't receive a modmail message within an hour of the removal, your post may have been caught in the spam filter. Send the mods a polite message with a link to the removed/non-visible post.
If your account has been shadowbanned, all your posts and comments will automatically go to the spam queue without mods knowing; it's on you to let them know (politely) with a link to the post/comment.
If your post is removed from NoSleep but can be edited to fit the guidelines, edit the removed post and ask mods to review it. If the mods feel the changes fit the guidelines, they'll either re-approve the post or give you permission to delete and repost with the new version. Don't ask right away if you can delete/repost, they will let you know!
If your post is removed from NoSleep and would have to be drastically changed to fit the guidelines – to the point that you'd have to write a new story – you can either edit the post to change the story or post the story as-is to another subreddit. In this case, posting to another subreddit is usually the best option.
Please respond to modmail messages directly, don't create a whole new message in response as that starts a new "thread" which gets confusing and makes more work for everyone. Please stick to one (1) message thread for a specific issue/topic by clicking "Reply"! Also, be sure to include the link to the removed/non-visible post in question.
##ABOUT REPOSTS. NoSleep doesn't allow users to repost or delete and repost without prior mod permission. Doing so repeatedly will get you banned from the subreddit.
Removed posts, even those taken down by Automoderator, must be read and reviewed by a human mod (and sometimes more than one). This takes longer than 2 minutes – especially if your story is several thousand words long – so please be patient.
If you notice spelling/grammar/punctuation (SPAG) errors in your post, EDIT it, don't delete it!
If you realize only part of the story posted, EDIT the post, don't delete it!
If you're on the app and it won't let you edit, switch to mobile browser or a non-mobile device (like a desktop or laptop), don't delete the post! If you can't do either of those, contact the NoSleep mods.
Don't repost or delete/repost to get more attention/upvotes. That's a form of karma farming which is against Reddit's rules. You're not allowed to repost or delete and repost just to get more attention on NoSleep. Period.
If a mod gives you permission to delete and repost, the permission only applies to that specific individual post once and only once. You don't have permission to delete and/or repost the same story multiple times, nor do you have permission to delete and/or repost any other story you want. Also, don't ask mods right off the bat if you can repost/delete and repost; they'll let you know after reviewing your post/situation.
If your post is autoremoved (taken down by Autobot/Automod) for breaking the 24 hour rule or for having formatting/title issues, you're allowed to repost without first getting mod permission in modmail. Just keep in mind: your repost could still be removed by human mods if it doesn't fit the guidelines.
If there's another reason you'd like to repost your story, contact NoSleep mods FIRST and WAIT FOR PERMISSION. If you're told no, don't repost. Period.
To repost a story you previously submitted to NoSleep, these requirements must be met:
-
the original post must still be on NoSleep and have been up for at least 6 months, so mods can do a comparison. Don't delete the original post. If mods can't see the original NoSleep version, they can't do a comparison and you won't be allowed to repost.
-
you must significantly rewrite the story, including plot and characters. You can't repost the exact same story with no changes or even just minimal changes (like fixing spelling and grammar errors and/or changing character names); there must be significant differences.
-
you must submit a draft of the new version along with a link to the original post on NoSleep, so the mods can do a comparison. Send a link of the Google doc draft to r/nosleepauthors following their instructions.
-
you must wait for official mod permission through modmail to repost.
If you've lost access to your previous account and want to repost or continue your old stories/series under a new account – you can't. If you can't access the old/original account, you can't prove to NoSleep moderators that you, under your new account, are the same author. This includes the account being suspended or banned by Reddit or you've lost the password for it, etc.
Reposting your old stories under your new account without permission will result in your new account being banned for plagiarism.
If you're voluntarily changing usernames and want to repost your old stories under your new account – you must first contact the NoSleep mods from your old/original account to give them the new account name (I.E. "I'm u/JohnDoe101 and I'm switching usernames to u/JoDo2022"). Then, message them from the new account to confirm (I.E. "I'm u/JoDo2022, I used to be u/JohnDoe101 and I messaged you about changing accounts"). The repost rules above (wait 6 months, significantly re-write, etc) must still be followed.
If you've posted stories elsewhere and want to post them at NoSleep, modmail the NoSleep mods first for instructions.
