General Discussion

My coworker was explaining to my nevermo coworker that Brigham young was a polygamist. He said "This was to help the women out, see there weren't enough men. And who was going to take care of all those women?"

Ah yes, because there is no way to take care of another person without marrying them. What a benevolent man!

Right?! …”Lemme help you out, I now own all your property and your body”

Such a giver Brigham was.

The church still thinks like this, they don't see women as fully human imo.

TIL when the priests went over to mow the lawn and weed the gardens of a widow, we should’ve been having sex with her like Brigham did.

The church is clearly in apostasy now! :)

If polygamy was all about taking care of women because there weren't enough men, why did Bishop Warren Snow, who was already married to several women, go after a much younger woman who was engaged, and castrate the young man she was to marry after they both refused to break off the engagement? Brigham Young ordered it to be swept under the rug, too.

Sauce

Nah. Polygamy was just part of their sex cult.

There were always more men than women in what became the Utah Territory back then.

That person is just parroting shitty chapel apologetics they heard someone else say.

Other common shitty chapel apologetics about polygamy are:

Women couldn’t own property - false

So many Mormon men died from conflicts and oppression - false (IIRC, approximately 50 Mormon men died in conflicts, and some women, too.)

Marriages were just for protecting the women - false

I’m sure there are more.

Child rape came from the beginning in the church. Before your flawed logic theory. Girls were groomed and pressured to have to f old nasty men or their salvation was threatened. It was rape. The polygamy wives were treated like crap. Cattle in a field to slake their lust on. You don't have to f someone to get protection and food. They had to sell their bodies to survive. Who so ever hurts a child should have a millstone around their neck, dropped into the ocean and would have been better if they had never been born. That means they are devils and there is no forgiveness. These men are angels to a devil. 11th article of faith. Can't understand why current Mormons come on here and spout their brainwashing. That is an invasion of someone else's beliefs which is contrary to the gospel.

I’m exmo. Those are shitty excuses Mormons use to rationalize and justify the Mormon sex trafficking and polygamy as they practiced it.

Apologetics == excuses

To be TBM enough to let this information which is rather well hidden inside the cult go without scrutiny is an abomination. Sex Cult.

I’ve heard this story a couple times but never was able to pin a source down. Pretty dark shit.

His 57 kids from 16 of his wives suggest there was at least one other reason for him practicing polygamy…

That wearied excuse for Mormon polygyny in pioneer-era Utah, namely that there were more women than men, has been empirically disproven.

In fact, according to Apostle John Widtsoe, there were more men than women in pioneer-era Utah. Widtsoe writes, in his 1943 book "Evidences and Reconciliations":

"The United States census records from 1850 to 1940, and all available Church records, uniformly show a preponderance of males in Utah, and in the Church. Indeed, the excess in Utah has usually been larger than for the whole United States, as would be expected in a pioneer state. The births within the Church obey the usual population law — a slight excess of males. Orson Pratt, writing in 1853 from direct knowledge of Utah conditions, when the excess of females was supposedly the highest, declares against the opinion that females outnumbered the males in Utah. (The Seer, p. 110) The theory that plural marriage was a consequence of a surplus of female Church members fails from lack of evidence." (Evidences and Reconciliations, p. 391)

This is exactly what I was taught & believed for years. Thank goodness I finally learned the truth

Funny I spent decades believing the same and that it was a special calling and helping the poor widowed women. I am more repulsed than watching Freak Stain Warren Jeffs and the ilk hunt down the youngest prey. The same spirit which may possess a power hungry freak Bishop male to castrate another so as to block him from obtaining a child bride that he himself wants to biblically have is outrageous to the point of savagery. Can think of nothing more devilish. Anyone today after the same is evil and should be vanquished.I want no association with this. Any more

If you come across Todd Comptom's In Sacred Loneliness and read Emily Partridge's chapter be prepared for some very heart wrenching words. She was sent to the 600 acre Forrester Farm to support 20 men and make cheese for brigham's favoured wives. Emily was one of joe's. She begged him to help pay a 25c water bill, and let her go to find another man. Didn't stop brigham having 7 children by her.

One example of the 55 he had.

Sex cult.

Came here to say this. The journals of polygamist wives offer a real snapshot of how well they fared

Oh man, when they learn the truth, or finally think for themselves. Makes me sick now that I once bought that lie.

Gold__star🌟 for you•

Frontiers were notoriously man-heavy. The reason Wyoming was first to give women the vote was a 6:1 ration of men to women.

There is no evidence of significant numbers of men (vs women) dying from the trek or persecution. Women died frequently from childbirth and cooking fires.

The church did frequently encourage missionaries to target women recruits to fill the need, but they still had to resort to marrying ever younger girls to have enough brides for alpha males.

By far the stupidest TBM explanation for polygamy.

D&C132, "if a man espouse a virgin, and desire to espouse another"

GTFO

Then why did my grgrgrgrgrgr grandma marry JS when she was already married? And then her daughter did that same??? 🤔🤔🤔

Leaving out the fact there were plenty of men - WHY would they presume the women needed help?

The argument I have always heard is that polygamy enabled women to go out and do more, aka receive education while the other wife/wives watched the children.

OOF

Imagine . . . if they actually cared about women's ability to think back then. Maybe we not have been programmed to believe "no success can compensate for failure in the home"

1
xxEmberBladesxxDevoted Servant to the Gaming Gods•

There were more men than women at that time.

4
gingernetzOP•

True, but that doesn't account for the age of a lot of them. And it was still seen wrong by everyone else, as it is now.

3

No, polygamy was a way for men to gain wealth (exponential) wealth. They could spread their wives across the western continent (Canada to Mexico) and increase their ability to homestead. A man could build a dug out and leave a young women with two or three children to work themselves to death. Some of the farms became prosperous, some women died, but those that survived all belonged to the husband. Women couldn’t own property in Wyoming territory until 1870. See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_women%27s_legal_rights_in_the_United_States_(other_than_voting)

Somehow I don't doubt that this was Brigham's reasoning for instituting polygamy, but at the same time.... What was the beehive mansion for then?
