a seemingly honest, unexpected meet-cute at Walgreens but wrong number given out (do I message on IG?)

So I (26F) walked into a Walgreens a few weeks ago after trying to do a solo night out (a lot of my friends are partnered and don't like going to bars on weekends), so I was dressed nicely, had my hair done, etc. I only wanted an M&M's, which is in the candy aisle kinda by the start of the Walgreens check-out line. I'm grabbing my small thing of M&M's minding my own business when this (cute!) dude who was walking to the check-out line pauses and does like a double take and then asks "Is that all you're getting?" I was a bit startled but still responded something along the lines of "Yeah! I don't keep candy in my apartment so I like to treat myself every now and then" (or something silly, I can be so awk), and he responds "I'll get it for you!" The line was a bit long-ish so we're chatting, the convo is going well, nice witty banter, we both joke with the cashier a bit lol, he pays and then as we walk out he asks about swapping numbers but then mentions how his phone is dead and shows me it as proof - and it really was about dead (you know when your phone's battery is so low it shows just the battery on the home screen) - so I give him my phone to put his name and number in. I immediately text him my name (messing up my own last name because I'm stupid lol I immediately correct it) and then he hugs me and we part ways! He had picked up beer and was going to a pregame and we both mentioned how we lived in the area (on/near the same block, it seems). It was like an unexpected, honest meet-cute.

Anyways, I didn't get any response from him (I had only sent him my name from that evening) so I text him a few days later (a very chill text, like "Hey thanks for getting my M&M's :) lmk if you want to do happy hour this week!") and again no response, so I'm like whatever, we win some, we lose some. I wound up searching him on IG just out of curiosity since his name is pretty unique, and came across his (public, IDK why more people don't keep it private) IG profile (which seems like he barely uses), but again did nothing with that info (I've had dudes with GFs try things with me before, so I was like "hm maybe it was that type of situation," but it didn't seem like that was the case here). I move on with life, go on other dates, the apps are trash, etc etc.

Recently, though, I was chatting about this with some friends, and they're picking it apart since it seems odd to them that someone would do all that and not follow through to at least a first date. I show them the short text thread (I haven't deleted it, idk perhaps I should) and then I do realize that the texts had come up green even though he had shown me an iPhone (like I have, but also I know some people use Google Voice or whatever, so it would still show as green despite the phone) but then we googled the number he gave (sorry this is so creepy haha but my friends and I were invested in why someone would go to that trouble!) and it comes up the number of some random lady in a different state. They think I should message him on IG, but I'm very against that (it seems creepy, like it's crossing a boundary, already all the googling feels creepy) but idk I am a bit confused as to why someone would do all that, seem interested in meeting the person, and then either give a fake number or not respond at all? Or like why even give out a number, it's not like I was initiating any of it.

Just curious to see what others think! I feel like if the universe wants it to be, then I'll simply bump into him in the neighborhood again lol that already happened with a different dude I went on one Hinge date with back during the summer (I was not prepared for that run in ... it was in the self-check out line of the grocery store, I was looking rough, his dad was there, gah lol)
