I’m sorry Connie and Bill
I watched the sun set over a burning building
While I sat on a hill next to a nest of yellow jackets Buzzing around
Like the firemen trying to put the house out.
The home owner walked down the street
Maybe a mile
Maybe trying to forget the heat
His wife had a stroke
She was in a chair and on oxygen
She had a sister and brother who lived there too
He broke his leg jumping out the second story window to safety
And she lost a service dog
Across the road is a gas station
it’s owned by a first generation immigrant
He eagerly gave them water and food and $100 from his register
I saw hundreds of eyes that day
I only saw 8 with tears
A Distinct and acknowledged fear
His cousin he hadn’t seen in years helped put up a canopy
so people didn’t have to sit and watch in the sun
They walked across the road to get beer
And wine
And cigarettes
For the adults
And soda
And snacks
For the kids
When the evening died down
So did the fire
and the fighters retreated
They where defeated
The only thing left was a few walls
A foundation
And snack wrappers in odd formations
I watched the sun set over a burning building
I sat on a hill next to a nest of yellow jackets
Not a single one got the courage to sting me
But I watched hundreds of people Sting 4 people who now live in there garage.
