Why am I still cold when I'm wearing 3 thermal shirts, and wool blend sweater and a soft shell outer jacket?

Put some pants on.

Have you ever been tested for low iron, or anemia? Medical advice can't be provided here, but if you haven't, you should ask a doctor about it if you can.

Also hypothyroidism.

Not the first time I've heard that. I think I will look into that.

are you moving about at all? those layers don't create heat they just trap it. You need to do something to create the heat so the clothes can trap it

Chago_Bot•

Pro tip: Humans lose a lot of heat through the head and feet. Wearing all those layers might not be as effective as a wool hat and thick socks.

I thought that was a myth.

I'd rather freeze than wear a wool hat. My current coat is wool with a satin inside lining, the outside is gross feeling the inside in cold and a smooth eh. I have to wear a sweatshirt under it.

I do alway recommend getting high quality winter boots. NOT UGGS! It's cold and rainy in my area of Wisconsin and there are place along my walking commute route that get some deep puddles. Nothing quite ruins a day like stepping in a big puddle with normal shoes. Mine are rubber up to the ankle, leather, and the top 2-3 inches that hit up to mid shin are a plaid/tartan (I think it's tartan but I'm sans shoes at work rn), and I can't think of what that fabric is. But it all has an Uggs like inside layer that keeps you warm, but pushes down your socks of they're not long socks. They took me a while to break in, but now they're great.

Agree on the protective footwear. I just got a pair of Native’s Nova Hydroknit. Waterproof membrane up to the lower calf.

MusicalPigeon•

I have no clue what brand my boots are I just got them from Walmart and since my parents were being them (I was 19 at the time) and I lived in an area where snow fall with the hills got crazy they told me price didn't matter. It's been about 3 years so I don't remember everything. I can check in the morning if I remember (it's late, my boots are in the mudroom and my mudroom is cold and gives me the creeps (I've been putting g off asking for help fixing the light for a couple years now).)

Is it really cold where you are?

9
Basic_Spud_OP•

Yeah im in southern California and it's been abnormally cold. Last night it got down to 34. I had multiple layers on and blankets and still cold. But I'm always cold even when it's like 60 haha. But California 60 hits different. Everyone is all bundled up outside.

My sister is the same way. She was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Its an autoimmune thyroid disease.

Where do you feel cold? Inside home? On the street? Where is 34F? Inside home? On the street?

2
claybrody•

Move to Minnesota for a year and you'll never be cold again in your life

2
acmwtn•

You mentioned it was 34, your probably soaking wet from sweat. 34 is really not that cold.

6
identiifiication•

They are using Fahrenheit. 34F = 1.1111 degrees Celsius.

5
CalgaryChris77•

Which would be cooking in that many layers.

10
VShadow1•

That’s still not that cold.

5
heyheyronn•

Nearly freezing point for water. Also, comfort is subjective. They are cold. Who are you to dictate that?

VShadow1•

My point is that if they are that cold with that many layers something is wrong with their body.

What if OP is measuring in Kelvin?

2
cracka1337•

There is an absolute zero chance of that.

3

that's still warm, I walk around in -3 Celsius in thin sweaters

0
identiifiication•

Its -3 here here today. I'm wearing 5 layers of sock, 3 layers of trousers and 4 layers of top.

1

damn, that's a lot. I know people with very very low cold tolerance and even they don't need that many. well, good luck surviving the winter 🤝

OP is from Southern California. They are pretty soft when temp drops below 60°

muscle mass plays a huge part in your warmth factor. if you're skin and bones, you're gonna suffer more from the cold

6

What are you wearing on your bottom half? Long johns or thermal pants, warm socks, hoods or hats, also gloves can make a huge difference.

Might also help to carry an insulated bottle of hot liquid with you and sip on it when you’re cold

5
GiraffeWeevilHuman Bean•

You might be sick. Or you might be hungry. Eat some hamburgers.

3
Noremac420•

Agree with the hunger part. I intermittently fast (often on purpose, but many days work stress takes the hunger right out of me), and after 18 - 24 hours without food, even a temp in the 60s can feel as if it's freezing.

2
GiraffeWeevilHuman Bean•

Sounds about right!

It is usually not eating enough calories or not enough sleep; it's cold and the days are short.

Antarctic explorers eat sticks of butter before they go out in the cold.

3
ViaPersona•

You could have Raynaud’s Syndrome. It’s an unknown cause phenomenon where a person will experience high levels of coldness in their fingertips and toes due to lowering of temperatures. It doesn’t even have to be that cold for them to experience yellow fingers, to white to blue which equates to frost bite. It seems to be genetic but could also be due to underlying diseases. It could be 60 degrees Fahrenheit and they’d experience it.

No7onelikeyou•

Because what you’re wearing is cold too?

1
Viktor_Fry•

What about the rest of the body?

All those layers are useless, better focus on feet and head/shoulders/neck.

Also, sweat is bad. I have kinda sweaty feet, and I'm miserable till I get my shoes and socks off, the rest of the body is warm...

Low blood pressure. Get checked out
