When will a brave soul create a new lore database?

General

Nowadays, you never know when a lore tab (on an individual weapon or piece of armor) or an entire lore book will be hidden on third party apps that use the API, such as Ishtar Collective or even the Destiny Companion app itself. The only reliable way is to read it in-game.

I don’t know about you, but I used to read the lore like a book. Every time new stuff dropped, I’d read it in my free time. Can’t do that anymore. Is there still no database of, say, screenshots of the in-game lore tabs? I feel like this community would be on top of that.

Obviously this just a personal gripe, not really a big issue, but I’d really like to know if anyone has felt similar to me and created something like this.

Edit: Hey mods, can you lock this down? I appreciate the people who tried to help. But everybody seems to think I don’t know what Ishtar is. And furthermore seem to be misunderstanding the nature of request in my post. Clearly there’s nothing out there that I’m not aware of, so thanks!

yeah theyve created something like this, its called ishtar collective

According to the OP, Ishtar is reliant on the api.

But that doesn’t sound right. They might pull stuff but I can’t imagine the api going down would take down their site.

I THOUGHT I visited their site during the api outage weekend to look stuff up.

20
Mint-Bentonite•

you're right, its a voluntary fansite which collects and archives content onto their database

they even spoiler tag things that theyve taken from the API that isnt released in the game yet/released recently

SarcasticKenobi•

That’s what I thought. (The database aspect I mean)

I had to create similar (but smaller) projects like that at my old job. Pull from api. Cache it and keep a history. And let admins manually perform CRUD operations

Aquario_Wolf:black-armory: Rasmussen's Gift•

I'm not too well versed in database stuff like this, outside of what I had to cover at Uni, but pulling from the API is infinitely more worth it than wasting time screenshotting, categorizing, etc, on the off chance the API goes down for an extended period of time, I'd imagine.

Dr___Bright:dz: Darkness Zone•

They 100% operate by having a copy of the API at hand, Light gg too. They download a copy and update it once in a while

4
SarcasticKenobi•

Yeh. That’s what I assume. And I’ve done projects like that in the past for work. Keep a database, update it via scheduled process every day / week / whatever. And pageoads are reading from local database instead of relying on Bungie servers for live data.

Op made it sound like they only rely on api. And if api goes down so does Ishtar.

But Ishtar clearly keeps the data copied on their side.

Once the lore entries are updated to the API, they are archived. My post however is about new lore entries, such as those on new weapons and pieces of armor. They aren’t updated in tandem with the release of new seasons.

  1. Not everything is available through the API. Many lore entries still have to be cataloged manually.

  2. Some lore entries and items are hidden/classified/encrypted by bungie, even after they are made available to view in game. This is because of how updates tend to roll out in batches for the game and API where as a pre-coded release timetabled established at the beginning of the season might be implemented for weekly releases without updating the API markers for the community.

  3. Some lore items are available through the API, but kept classified by those who currate the websites due to major story spoilers. Leaks, spoils, and datamines have been rampant in the past 2 years, leading to a decline in the amount of secrets and puzzles that bungie has put into the game. Lore writers from bungie have come to this very subreddit to vent threir frustrations that weekly released lore books were leaked early. Bungie devs on twitter have openly pleaded to stop leaking and datamining everything the moment its created, and even before its created, but this has made little impact. This is why on r/destinylore, we have a 0 tolerance policy on even suggesting that leaks and spoilers of this nature exist. Criticism of it still proliferates awareness of it.

  4. Be the change you want to see in the world, o brave soul of mine. But beware, for those who have come before you have treaded these topics and problems for hundreds more hours than you have likely been aware of them.

AugmensionOP:nine: Agent of the Nine•

I’m aware of everything you’ve said here, but thank you.

And I do personally screenshot stuff so that I can read it later. I was just wondering if there was a larger database made by people like me who like to read the new lore a lot when most of it is only currently accessible in-game, and is not added to third party services for several weeks. Kinda surprised there isn’t, Destiny fans are usually on top of making things that help each other out.

And I’ve been a Destiny lore fan since before day 1, I’m kinda offended by that last comment 🥲

Tyrannus_ignus:banner: Iron Lord•

chill, its not that big of a deal to wait a week or two.

15
AugmensionOP:nine: Agent of the Nine•

This comment is not helpful nor productive. And I don’t see why “a week or two” would make a difference, some entries remain hidden for entire seasons.

If you can’t read it in game it seems wrong to read it on an external site imo. But, as someone else suggested, if you’re really this peeved about spoilers not being displayed early go build your own site. I’m perfectly content with Ishtar though, it’s an excellent service provided by people who are kind enough to keep spoilers out of their system as far as I’ve seen

4
AugmensionOP:nine: Agent of the Nine•

Spoilers? You’re clearly misunderstanding me. You should think and read it through before you decide to physically type out a comment thinking you have some sort of high ground. Smh. Typical redditor.

-5
DarthLttl:student: Lore Student•

Bro this whole thread is you just being pissy about nothing. I’ve read your original post multiple times and I’ve read damn near all of your quite useless comments and it really just seems like you’re asking for Ishtar, though for some reason you don’t like Ishtar. If it’s classified on Ishtar, check the companion app. If it’s classified there or you just don’t have the book, I’m certain there’s somewhere else on the internet that has you covered

8
xXLjordSireXx•

So a website that has lore written, and a screenshot of said lore from in-game?

8
AugmensionOP:nine: Agent of the Nine•

Yes, or just one or the other (either a screenshot, or written manually).

-1
starfihgter•

Ishtar absolutely has stuff that’s not in the API.

7
SarcasticKenobi•

Destinypedia has stuff. But some of their summaries are oversimplified and sometimes have theory as fact.

Also they don’t source well.

But they DO keep transcripts of lore cards and game dialog. I don’t think it’s as full as Ishtar’s. But since it’s a wiki it’s not reliant on the api.

Does Ishtar ONLY reply on api? That seems silly. And I thought I was reading it around the time the api was down but maybe I misremembered.

If I were making that site at the very least I’d keep cached versions on my own storage.

As a developer Ive been burned by APIs before. Outages, shutdowns, changing content all at once, etc.

5
helmsmagus•

Ishtar has a lot of things that aren't available in the api. They just don't manually add stuff that's still classified in the API.

6
AugmensionOP:nine: Agent of the Nine•

Ishtar does archive everything, but only to stuff that has officially been added. Nowadays, new lore tabs from new weapons and pieces of armor take weeks to be added, so they’re not on third party services that rely on the API, but they will be accessible in-game.

2
Queenie2211:osiris: Osiris Fangirl•

There are some who have put together sort of ebooks on the in game lore plus the actual Anthologies available to read too.

I've begun cataloguing lore but mainly to put certain stuff in time line order on characters and for my own personal use but I also rely heavily on the Anthologies and buy them upon release too. Ishtar has a sort of timeline but character lore is released out of order often times

As far as them being screenshots of the game I dont know what that would do except maybe aesthetics. Ishtar does pull from API but once it does it stays stored and doesnt seem to be affected if Bungie goes down.

If you are looking for ebook formats from other guardians maybe reddit search I have seen some doing some for offline reading purposes.

5
AugmensionOP:nine: Agent of the Nine•

I appreciate the help, but I’m specifically referring to lore tabs that can be read in-game, but take weeks to update through third party services. I know there’s archived stuff, Ishtar is amazing in that regard. But there are mini-stories in the weapons and armor usually, and I can’t read that in my off time anymore due to it not being updated as quickly as it used to be.

-2†
Queenie2211:osiris: Osiris Fangirl•

Yes these ebooks include the armor and weapons stuff but I imagine it would take someone time to put them together and I think they do it by season so yea wouldnt help you get them quicker I suppose.

Both Light.gg and Ishtar do have weapons stuff with light.gg sometimes releasing the lore part faster on weapons if that helps for now. But I think I understand what you mean.

Also the Destiny app you cab directly access the Collections tab that let's you read lore also

5
AugmensionOP:nine: Agent of the Nine•

Again, thank you for the help (I mean that completely un-sarcastically) because it seems you’re genuinely trying to help, but I wouldn’t have made the post if I could access them on either of those. That’s why I can’t read them as quickly as I used to. If it was “classified” on Ishtar, the companion app would have it. But that has no longer been the case for new lore tabs (I’m excluding lore books because that is somewhat understandable) for the the last year or so.

0
Queenie2211:osiris: Osiris Fangirl•

Sorry I must have misunderstood. I've found all weapons listed in collections just like in game fairly easily.

Only lore I dont find always is the weekly books that release as we have to wait.

For example I found even the exotic Bow lore the day it came out in collections and Light.gg was shortly thereafter. I always check collections day 1 of season and read the lore.

If it's available to see in the actual game collections has it. If it's not released quite yet but in the API then dataminers likely have it. I dont follow that stuff really though but I'm sure you could find it of it exists.

Sorry I couldnt help hope you find something to help you out.

Its ishtar collective.... sort by the newest season and enjoy your "new lore"

AugmensionOP:nine: Agent of the Nine•

You misread the post. Read it again, think a little harder, and get back to me if you wish.

1
Valthoros•

All I did was click reveal spoiler and I was able to read the newly added items, are you sure you've been "playing" since D1? What you're asking and what youre expecting seem off. Like I dont recall any items that have had there "lore" changed, maybe a gun reissued? When a gun gets re-released it has a new seasonal mark on it to identify its release window.

6
AugmensionOP:nine: Agent of the Nine•

Ugghhh dude I’m sorry if I disproportionately take it out on you, but I KNOW there is stuff on Ishtar. Some isn’t. You can’t just take one piece and say “oh everything’s there.” Take the new seasonal ritual pulse rifle. No item description or lore. Take the new Trials hand cannon. No lore. Until literally TODAY, the Warmind’s Avatar sets had no lore on third party apps, but they have been accessible since the season released. The point of the post was to say that lore USED to update in tandem with new in-game content, whether it was future spoilers or NOT. That doesn’t happen anymore, and it’s been about a year or so since that has been the case. I was simply asking if anyone has screenshot or transcribed the stuff that hasn’t updated. That’s it.
