Going to Tallinn with my class for ~6 weeks in May13, have a few questions...

Hi there,

So I'm French, 21, studying Business, and for our third year of studies, we're going to Tallinn for 6 weeks, starting around the 1st of May. To be honest, I don't know a lot about this city, except what I've been reading for the past hour on the Internet.

I guess I'l come back with a few questions later on this year, but still, I believe it might be interesting to get to talk and see some stuff starting now.

I don't know where we'll be staying yet, but I've been told it's in some kind of apartments in hotels, in Tallinn. We're a group of ~20 students, ~20 y/o, the apartments being with like 2 to 4 rooms, leaving room, blah blah.

  • My first question is about racism. Don't you get mistaken, I haven't heard anything special about Estonian (don't know if it's the way you say it in English) people. But I just know that, you know, people from Eastern Europe aren't all very fond of "others". As I'm half-black, half-white, making me look like some kind of arabic/hispanic dude, would you say I might get in trouble at some point ? in some place ? at some time ? I'm asking for honesty here, and every story would be great to read. For example, one my best friends went to "République Tchèque" last year (yeah, don't know the Country's name in English), he's black, and two guys asked to take a pic of him because they had never seen one before. No harm, but yet, he was very surprised.

  • More general : behaviour to avoid ? For example when walking in the street, when eating at some place, when going to a bar/club, when going to the groceries store, or concerning strangers that might talk to you because you're a tourist ? Or let's say, what have you seen coming from tourists that you think shouldn't be done ? Of course I won't be taking a dump in the middle of the street, but, you know...

  • Also general : things that you guys do that foreigners (French, n'est-ce pas?) might forget to do ?

  • Cultural places to visit, such as monuments, museums, nice buildings/areas/landscapes ?

  • And, also important, where to go to at night ? Places safe, where people are open-minded, willing to talk, blah blah ? Or places where you could eat a very nice meal (better if you try before :P) ? And some cool places to go to ?

  • In any situation, if I can't be understood, I've read that English is better with young people, and German with elderly ones. I guess it's correct ?

  • Another question, as it seemed kindda difficult to find in French, would you guys know the average price for a car rental /weekORmonth? price for cabs for, let's say, half the city ? average price for a pint of beer ? for a bottle of whisky (like Jack Daniel's) at a grocery store ?

  • Finally, a good website which might help me with some updated words for starters ? FrenchOREnglish <-> "Estonian"... I guess it's easy to find, but if you've tried one and recommend it, just tell me. Might save me some time.

Thanks a lot for anyone answering ! I'll keep on reading, but still I wanted to open my own thread because I could directly interact and ask more questions. Also, I really believe your answers here might be more interesting than what I might find randomly with Google. And yeah, don't have to answer EVERY question, just the ones that you might be willing to answer to. If you have a website to give instead of an answer, just go ahead! THANKS !!!

Edit : Some mistakes. And I keep seeing new ones. Added a few questions.
