Pupper Is Suffering With Canine Dementia And Won’t Eat Much

[Misc Help]

My pupper was recently diagnosed with canine dementia and won’t eat much, no matter what I try. Anyone have any hints or ideas to get her to eat more? I’ll try anything. Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you.

Have you done broth soaked kibble? Can you do puzzles with her so she eats throughout the day rather than one big meal? Have you tried free feeding?

Just thoughts of the top of my head. I’m sorry you’re both going through this. I hope you’re able to find the right combination!

Haven’t done broth soaked kibble, so that’s worth a shot. Not sure what you mean by puzzles related to eating. Her food is available anytime she wants to eat, I just refill when she’s low. Thanks for the suggestions!

By the puzzles, I mean those that finding puzzles that the dog has to nose and gets treats when doing the right action. Or a snuffle mat.

My blind guy loves running and “finding” kibble I throw on the floor.

Well, the thing is she’s not interested in food or treats, and she used to be extremely motivated by food. Thanks again for the suggestions.

I’m so sorry for you pupper. I Read something that said baby food and chicken broth mixed in their food can help but it wasn’t species specific so I’m not sure.

I’ll give it a try. I have both, and it certainly won’t hurt. Thanks for the suggestion.

My old lab loved her kibble soaked in broth!! I'd heat up 1/2 cup of beef broth until almost boiling. Then pour it over her kibble and let it sit until lukewarm, stir, and serve. Somewhere I read that heating the broth helps make the food aroma enticing. Worked great for us!!!

Thanks for the idea!

I know this isn’t the healthiest but a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese or the smallest bit of melted butter helps in emergencies, that is if broth or other mentioned options don’t end up working. Good luck!

I’ll try anything. There have been days where all she would eat is a fast food grilled chicken filet, so that’s what she got to eat. It’s better than her eating nothing. Thank you.
