A new book is laying claim to be the most sexual ever written (on the basis that publishing on Kindle breaks the shackles that normal publishers would apply).

But it's fundamentally a romance book, the sex is just part of the romance:

- The male narrator almost always falls in love with the women he has sex with

- The whole book holds together because of his love for the central woman character Willow.

- Generally there is a reasonable balance of power between women and men.

- Although the sex is explicit, women are not treated as objects.

I think that if a book has these things, it's a romance book.

There's Sexual Need by Jon Mack on Kindle, which has an author's note saying traditional publishers would never publish this book without watering it down, the digital format breaks the shackles.

What other books break the shackles? There is a lot of digitally published sexual fiction but mostly they read as if still shackled.

(The reason I'm interested is that the treatment of sex in fiction is an area of great public interest but very under-researched, I'm applying for an academic grant on this.)

There was an excellent question posted here a week ago, What's the SPICIEST but also BEST-WRITTEN book?

I think the treatment of sex in fiction is an area of great public interest but very under-researched, I'm applying for an academic grant on this.

Can I ask: in all the top picks the emphasis was on a female POV.

Female narrators: KUSHIEL'S DART by Jacqueline Carey on Kindle, THE CLAIMING OF SLEEPING BEAUTY by A.N. Roquelaure on Kindle

Male narrators: ENDLESS LOVE by Scott Spencer on Kindle, SEXUAL NEED by Jon Mack on Kindle.

tl;dr - Can you suggest any other male POV spicy book that would make it to the top 10?

I used to think that sex scenes in fiction were invariably embarrassing and contrived, but I've changed my mind, having just read Sexual Need by Jon Mack (on Kindle).

I think it's because conventional syntax is too stodgy - here the author has found a syntax whose pace is attuned to explicit sex.

Take this as an example of the syntax (not of an explicit sex scene, which I don't like to quote, out of deference to the sub, but similar points apply):

One Wednesday, Willow opening the door to let me in, she’d offered me some keys in the past but we chatted about it for a bit, decided against, feels more exciting for me to have to knock, like new lovers. Kissing me, offering coffee, sittin

After years of trying different things to sort out my intermittent Dead Bedroom, reading sexually explicit fiction together has had some good results.

I'm in an intermittent DB, but my wife and I stumbled onto something that seems to work: reading sexually explicit fiction together.

It's sort of a safe version of porn (if I suggested porn my wife would just look at me like I'm a pervert).

We've tried BARED TO YOU by Sylvia Day on Kindle, ENDLESS LOVE by Scott Spencer on Kindle, SEXUAL NEED by Jon Mack on Kindle, and TROPIC OF CANCER by Henry Miller on Kindle.

My wife is generally an avid reader so this is definitely her thing. It is good to have discovered a sexual thing that she doesn't

There are some great sex stories here, why not collect the best ones and publish?

Maybe the ten stories with the most upvotes in each genre (threesomes, blowjobs...)

Proceeds to go to a sex related charity. This would require agreement from posters, which could be a condition of posting.

r/booksuggestions•

I'm looking for fiction recommendations for my wife and I, both in our late 60s, married 40+ years, we're interested in reading novels that explore the complexity of sexual desire and intimacy in long-term partnerships.

I want books that:

- Feature protagonists actually in their 60s or older (not "youthful for their age" fantasy versions)

- Take sexual desire seriously, not as something quaint or diminished by age

- Explore the emotional complexity of intimacy in long relationships

- Are sexually explicit

- Are well-written, not formulaic

Thanks
