So the first thing that happens in this book is a major plotpoint driven by a sniper, after a roughly 70 year timeskip. I think this creates like 3 plotholes at once?

  • Why hasn't anyone tried this before? Supposedly millions of years and no one has tried the distract them then use a sniper trick? Why weren't the other characters prepared for it?
  • Why did it work? We spend 10 books hearing about how difficult to kill immortals are, then we try the "also boom he's dead" trick suddenly? Why were there no countermeasures for, I dunno, the head? For one of the more valuable characters?
  • Why are the MCs suddenly weaker than randoms? We're told ascenders are so beyond other characters that havi

Reading welcome to the multiverse, enjoying it well enough. But every so often the author writes the MC meeting a female character, where invariably the response is one of two types:

1: "Wow she's cute 10/10 supermodel beyond human understanding, I will repeat this 4 times before I am satisfied."

2: "She's cute and while other guys would normally turn into animals around women, I as a nice guy will not use my charisma in this way. I made sure to say this out loud so that you understand what a stand-up guy I am."

Does the author figure out how weird this is at some point or are we going to keep doing this? I think the rest of the series is fine but these interactions are kinda cringe.

Most of the way through book 1, good prose but otherwise really bog-standard cultivation novel. Does something interesting happen before book 2 or is this something I can get wherever?

My first warning should probably have been when the main character was named "Zane".

I was sold this series on the premise that it was a shameless power fantasy. I would have been down for that, Primal Hunter delivers that with a side of strong storytelling. It is not a shameless power fantasy. It is a deeply ashamed power fantasy.

Everything this book does is an apology. The MC is super special and better than everyone else. Except he isn't! Actually he's low ranked on earth and everyone else can kick his ass. They will line up in a row for him so that he can barely win each time, naturally. No matter how many plotholes we must dig to achieve it, Our MC Will Struggle!(tm)

I'm on book 5. This is the first of Seth Ring's work I've read since it's the one I've heard most about. It started out pretty well, book 3 started going downhill, and finally at book 5 I'm dropping.

The main issue is that the author is so clearly ashamed of having written an OP MC 4 books ago that he feels obligated to use literature's most tortured plot devices in order to write the combat to which he is accustomed.

"The world will end if you use mana because points!"

"The world will end if you use mana because your mana is too good!"

"You can't fight, you said you wouldn't earlier!"

"You can't kill anyone, there's a DRAGON in your soul who eats people and he'll Faust you if you do!

Before I say anything, DotF 15 was fantastic, >!the ramping action through the graveyard building to the all-out setpiece fight using the imperial faith, white sky, and law tribulation was edge-of-your-seat gripping.!<

!The ending, however, left me with some concerns for the type of book 16 is going to be. Originally, Ultom seemed like it was meant to be another huge brawl section, like the Twilight ascent's last part. Getting to the end of 15, we now know flamebearers are not necessarily in direct competition for the legacy. Additionally, Zac ends the book in such a nerfed state that there isn't really any way he could get in a fight for the vast majority of the next book. We also get som

I'm looking for recs where the MC actually enjoys what they're doing. Originally I thought I just had a preference for OP characters, but what I really can't stand is when 90% of the book is about fighting and the MC can't stop whining about it. It's like if every time the jackass guy was about to jump in a shopping cart and ride it down the hill he was like "oh god oh geez oh golly this is going to be so terrible why am I here again oh no!" Also acceptable would be approaching the content of the book in a 'professional' sense? I.e, maybe they don't relish the idea of a fight, but at least the MC doesn't spend the whole thing screaming about how yet another thing has gone wrong.

It is now genuinely possible that someone's first Like A Dragon game is Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. I'm super curious if there's anyone like that and what that experience was like.

Why no helm

Discussion

Mr. Clive certainly has trouble with that mark on his face. But why not just wear a helm? Every imperial soldier wears a helm and no one questions them.
