I'm new to the romantic fantasy genre but the categorizations are confusing. I believe that high fantasy refers to stories that include many made up elements (fictional countries, fictional cultures, fantastical beings, magical elements etc). For example (please correct me if I'm wrong):

  • Radiance series by Tavia Lark
  • The Knight And The Necromancer series by A.H. Lee
  • Starian Cycle series by Iris Foxglove
  • Captive Prince series by C.S. Pacat

Assuming the above is correct, I'm having trouble learning the proper categorizations for other types of stories. For example, the following are referred to as low fantasy or urban fantasy but I don't understand the distinction:

  • Heart Of Stone

Somebody left a comment on a fic that I published in 2006, pointing out that the fic included a torture scene and I hadn't checkmarked the 'graphic violence' warning (I had checked 'no warnings apply', which was the default I used for all fics back then). I didn't remember what scene they were talking about so I re-read the fic and I discovered that I should have included the violence warning, as well as warnings for multiple character deaths and various other things. Oh, how times have changed.

Anyway, then I scrolled through the rest of my old fics (some going back to 2001) and I realized I hadn't included content warnings on any of them because things like that weren't a big part of fanf

This is a long shot but you guys are my last hope. In June 2020, I read a story called Unearthly on AO3. It was about ArchAngel Nate who was forced into retirement on earth after his wings got badly damaged during a battle. He works as a cop in the UK and his female partner is an important side character. His long time enemy ArchDemon Aeron also works on earth as some type of CEO. They keep interacting with each other and eventually fall in love. I remember two scenes vividly. One where Aeron is being held hostage and Nate turns on his ArchAngel Badass Mode to rescue him. Another scene was Nate allowing Aeron to see and touch his damaged wings and it was really emotional before turning into

Please take a moment to feel sorry for my dumb-dumb nature. I've been driving myself crazy for a year because I keep coming up with great story ideas, but they aren't optimal for romance. As a long time ship-fic writer, I kept thinking I have to force a romance into those stories to make them work and that's stopped me from bothering. But just yesterday, I remembered that gen fics exist and it's perfectly acceptable to write a fic featuring a popular pairing, but keep things platonic from start to finish.

Excuse me while I go blow the dust off my keyboard and get to work.

I've gone through many of the bodyguard rec posts but none of the recs matched what I want. I'd like a bodyguard romance where both characters take their jobs seriously. I want a competent and intelligent bodyguard. I want a celebrity/royal/CEO/mafia don (etc) who isn't a spoiled brat and takes their job seriously.

Please no age gaps or instalove. If there's an action/suspense component to the plot, I prefer that the romance plotline still takes center stage.

I saw bodyguard recs for the following authors in previous posts but these authors don't work for me:

  • Charlie Cochet
  • Sloane Kennedy
  • Onley James
  • Eden Finley
  • Lucy Lennox

Two recs that I've picked up from previous rec posts t

Hello All.

My mom's favorite author is Brenda Jagger and she owns paperback copies of her favorite romances by her. My mom has had these books for decades but unfortunately, the font size is now too small for her to enjoy them. The ebooks aren't available on Kindle or through our library so we've hit a dead end. Does anybody know any online stores that sell old ebooks, kind of like ebay for physical books?

My mom's specifically looking for the following:

  • Winter's Child
  • A Song Twice Over
  • Days Of Grace
  • Distant Choices
  • Barforth Trilogy (Verity, Flint And Roses, The Sleeping Sword)

Many M/M reviewers I follow on GR have gushed about how much they loved The Wode series, but I'm confused by conflicting descriptions regarding the romance. Some say there's a lot of sex and the MMC's angst about their relationship a lot, but others say it shouldn't be classified as a romance...?

I'm not a huge fantasy fan so I was mostly interested in this as a medieval-era historical romance, but I'm not sure if I'd get what I'm looking for. The book/series is extremely long, so I'd love some opinions from others.

My cycle:

  1. Find a book I love
  2. Check the author's page on GR and find out:
  3. They stopped writing years ago OR they're putting out books in different subgenres and it's a subgenre I can't stand
  4. Cry

Do you have a favorite author who isn't publishing anymore (or switched genres)? What about an author whose work you used to love but their work lost its spark for you?

I'll share mine in the comments.

Also - if anybody has updates about any of the authors listed below, it would be cool if we shared what we know.

I'm subscribed to Ashlyn Drewek's newsletter and she sent a message today that she's put her next two planned books on hold with no plans on when/if they'll ever get written. The two books are the 5th installment of the Leander Welles series and a book in the Roan Sinclair/Solnyshko universe which would have featured Misha as the MC.

The reason she's stopped working on both books is a combination of burn out and her being a mood writer, which means she can't work on a story unless she's in the right headspace.

I'll put an excerpt from her newsletter in the comment below.

I don't read a lot of fantasy because the worldbuilding usually overwhelms me but I just read Kaje Harper's Nor Iron Bars A Cage and I loved it! I want to explore more from this genre, but I'm a bit intimidated.

I love hurt/comfort, enemies-to-lovers and badass warrior characters but many of the fantasy books I come across seem to have very complicated worldbuilding or reviews indicate that the romance takes a backseat in the story.

I'm looking for high fantasy recs with a simple (or at least, not overly complicated) world where the romance between the MCs is the driving force throughout the story. It's fine if there are other plotlines, but I want the MCs to spend lots of meaningful time

My entry into MM romance was back in 2004. It was through fanfic, specifically the McShep pairing in Stargate Atlantis. I'd been involved in reading and writing fanfic for a while by then but I always focused on gen (non-romance) stories. I somehow stumbled into the SGA fandom on Livejournal, where McShep was the most popular pairing for writers and readers, and that was that. After spending time in many other fandoms after SGA and falling in love with many other pairings, I decided to give original fic MM a shot about a year ago and now here I am.

How and when did you get into reading MM romance?
