Although I can read Japanese pretty well after more than a decade here, one of my earliest memories of Japan (when I could not even read hiragana) was mistaking this for a strawberry-flavored popsicle. Have you ever had a literacy-related surprise?https://imgur.com/gallery/not-strawberry-8gvrAGR

I think it’s a common story. Even after I replaced the battery in my 12 mini, I found myself always worried that the battery would run out. It basically needed at least two meals per day.
So I bought the *extremely excellent* 17. Very bright screen. Long-lasting battery.
And kind of big. Kind of … *heavy*.
So I get home and want to goof off, and I go pick up the familiar, comfortable, *lightweight* 12. I can still use wifi on it to connect to the Internet.
God, I hope Apple gets a clue and sells some small phones soon.
Men buy life insurance to protect their family (especially their children) in case the man dies. If you are under 50, the chance that you will die is probably not that different from the chance that you will go to prison.
And the financial consequences of a parent or spouse being sent to prison are devastating.
Yet nobody seems to buy insurance to cover lost income while they are in prison. Indeed, I have never heard of “prison insurance”.
If you could buy prison insurance at the same price you buy life insurance, and it would replace your income while you were incarcerated, would you buy it?

For approximately three years, I’ve been hoping to buy the kanji flashcards on the White Rabbit website. They are always “sold out”. When I search through this subreddit, I see other people reporting similar frustration.
Is it just the kanji cards that are unavailable? Has anyone bought anything from them in the last year or so?
Tricky Grammar (omitted subjects and several verb forms).
This sentence came up in my study materials:
泣いて止められ決心が鈍った。
The subject of the sentence is 決心. One clue I used to locate the subject was to look for 「が」. And there it is, right after 決心.
The rest of the sentence is … all verbs! So… let’s see… 決心が鈍った。 “My resolve dulled.” In natural English, “My resolve weakened.”
What about 「泣いて止められ」? 「止められる」would be 「being stopped」. I believe, the 泣いてjoins with 止められso that the final sentence means something like:
“My resolve weakened as she wept and begged me to wait.”
Of course, the actual sentence omits any mention of who is acting—which is just normal Japanese.

I noticed that when I feel a lot of anxiety about something, playing guitar helps me relax. In particular, the predictable chord pattern and restrictions of blues scales bring the world into order—although there is obviously still a lot of creativity within the “rules” of the blues. Any thoughts on this?
I’ve been on this subreddit a while and have found it very positive and informative. But now I know too much!
So these days, whenever I watch an interview with a male celebrity—especially the older guys—I find myself checking their hairlines. Or for a change in hair density, texture, or color—especially right above the ears. Sometimes this is more interesting than the interview content.
Of course, it’s different for female celebrities. I check them for extensions. And wigs.
Anyone else do this?
