I've always been a bit of a tinkerer, so when I learned that I could jailbreak my Kindle Oasis I immediately added it to my mental list of things to do. Having gone through the process with AdBreak...I'm not convinced.

I was looking forward to using KOReader, as it was apparently a better reader than the default one; maybe this is true, but as it doesn't seem possible to set it to the default reader it's also a few more button presses and double the time to open a book which, lazily, is more friction than I want. I'm now free of Amazon...but I've always been able to read non-Amazon books on the Kindle using Calibre.

I want to be a believer, but it feels like I'm missing something: so far J

I'm working through the Japanese basics lessons on Reshnuu, and they're great but there have been a few situations where some additional explanation would be useful.

I did a quiz today and it had this sentence:

\"Who is the noisy person?\"

A couple of lessons ago I learned that の designates possession in both a more literal and a more abstact way (eg Japanese teacher). I would have through that "noisy person" above would also use の - it feels like should be covered under abstract possession, but there's no の in this example. Can someone help me understand why, and clar

I've been using Cronometer for a while now but for the last few weeks every single advert I've seen has been broken. They play as expected, but the 'X' at the top corner doesn't close the advert, and instead I need to fully close the app and reopen it. I've contacted Cronometer support and I'm waiting for a response, but is anyone else seeing this too?

Hi! I am new to learning Japanese, and I'm fairly comfortable with Hirigana and Katakana. However I'm having a lot of trouble moving to Kanji. It feels like there's no context for anything I'm learning now: a lot of Kanji look very similar to each other, and I'm really struggling to find a good starting point.

Researching outside of Renshuu, it looks lile Kanji are made up of standard radicals, but I haven't seen them talked about at all in Renshuu.

Am I approaching this incorrectly? Should I focus on moving through the lessons without worrying too much about the Kanji for now? Or should I start approaching this differently? Any advice and personal annecdotes welcome!

I have been getting a PR_END_OF_FILE_ERROR error sporadically on Firefox. It only seems to affect certain sites - most commonly on reddit, but right now it's happening on nordvpn.com. It will happen consistently on the same site until it, apparently randomly, starts working again.

Observations:

  • It seems to only affect one site at a time (eg, it's happening on NordVPN's site now, but I can access reddit).
  • If I keep clicking the refresh button, the site does usually eventually load within a minute (although NordVPN has been inaccessible for a while now)
  • On other browsers on the same PC, I also can't access the same site but get a different error (on Edge and Chrome right now I'

I'm new to NAM, so apologies if I've missed something basic here, but I'm having a terrible time trying to get anything usable thought NAM.

I'm plugged in through a Scarlet 2i2, but I'm confident the guitar, lead, and interface aren't the problem (after spending an hour fiddling with NAM I swapped over to Guitar Rig 6 and everything sounded fine)

Loading up NAM, about half the time it fails to load completely. I click the icon, something pops up for a fraction of a second, then closes again. Eventually if I try enough it will open.

If it does open, about half the time I get a deafening square-wave buzz - it's not a usual amp buzz, it's way more synthetic sounding. Turning the noise gate t

I've done this a handful of times before at past properties and never had a problem, but for some reason in our new house, I can't get the bloomin' cylinders out of either the front or rear UPVC doors at my home. I've unfastened the screws that holds the cylinders in place and confirmed the cylinders have some wiggle to it, so they're definitely loose. I've spent 10 minutes inching the key around, degree by degree, on the front door lock, and then on the back door, but the things won't budge. I've tried using the keys on both sides, I've tried removing the locks from both sides, and I've tried removing the handles, but nothing.

Google tells me they're probably the original "Avantis" branded

Not certain this is the right subreddit for this but everyone here is always so helpful I thought I'd give it a go!

We've just moved into a new place and are having some trouble with the Beko dishwasher. Not totally sure of the model but it seems to have a manual with various models that begin with DFN05XNNX (where X is a letter and N is a number). It was previously a rental so I assume it's a cheap model.

The washer seems to run endlessly. It's like it's stuck on the wash part of the cycle and won't go to dry. Yesterday a 2 hour cycle ended up running for 6 hours before we realised and finally turned it off. Today we ran an empty load with a dishwasher cleaner in it. It ran for about 80%

We have just moved into a new (very cold!) house, but are having trouble getting the old Back back boiler pilot lit.

I am not convinced we are getting gas through the meter. We had the same meter in our old house, but here if I tap through to the next screen on the smart meter I get shown:

Credit ON Bal= £. 0.33

I've phoned octopus and they say this is expected if we're paying by direct debit (which we are) but it's not what we saw on the old meter, so I'm not convinced it IS working as expected.

We had a gas engineer booked for tomorrow, but in the meantime,

  1. Is the meter correct if we're paying by direct debit?
  2. Any tips for getting the pilot lit?

Thanks

We've moving house and I'm trying to cancel my broadband service with a small provider, but I'm having trouble getting anywhere. Here is what is happening:

  1. I phoned them to cancel my service. They took note of my details, and said they'd call me back in a few days.
  2. They called me back at a time I was unavailable and left a message, where they asked me to call them back on a specific number.
  3. I called them back on this number when I was available. The person on the other end asked for my details again, then told me someone from the cancellations team would call me back in a few days. I explained that I had missed their call and the message said to call this number, and asked if I co

Hello all, I'm having a bit of trouble replacing the old fluorescent bulb in our kitchen with an LED replacement. I've googled and searched this subreddit, but I'm still not having any luck.

The old tube is labelled Sylvania Luxline Plus F36W / 840 T8.

I bought an LED tube to replace it: Philips 16W G13, which says "only for use with magnetic ballast in combination with the provided LED starter".I've tried fitting the bulb and using the starter as described but I'm having no luck.

Documentation around replacing an old-style tube with an LED one is pretty sparse. Can anyone advise? What am I doing wrong here?

Hi legal folks,

We're based in England and have some neighbours who are doing some major work to their new property, including building a garage in their garden. Planning permission was granted for a flat-roofed garage up to 2.5m high.

However, now that work has been done, this is now a much taller gable roofed structure that's clearly not going to be used as a garage - the location shown as a garage door on the plans are instead double glazed windows, with a new fence has been built across where the drive is shown in the plans.

Ignoring the increase in height of the building which is clearly in breach of the rules as I understand them, is changing building use in this way acceptable, or
