I'm using shell.nix files to give myself a quick and easy environment for each of my projects, and for things like Python or Java, there are quite a few versions I can choose from.

But I'm using Pinta (paint.net-style program), and the version picked by NixOS (v3.0) is absolute garbage. I just want to go back to v2.1.2. Do I need to start using flakes?

I'm trying to run a minecraft server on my NixOS machine on port 43435, and connect to it from my son's ubuntu machine. It's just not working. Also, I can't ssh from my son's computer to mine, although the other direction works.

I'm using iptables to open the Minecraft port. Actually, I'm using the script shown here (called run-with-port) to open it only while the service is running: https://discourse.nixos.org/t/how-to-temporarily-open-a-tcp-port-in-nixos/12306/3

My son's computer has a Minecraft server running on port 43434, and I can connect to it fine from my NixOS machine. So my router (an eero) doesn't seem to be blocking any ports for intranet connections.

I bought a Makita 2703 table saw about 20 years ago. It's a worksite saw, but I bought it for home use because I didn't want to spend a lot. I used it for one project (without the guard), and experienced kickback. The board went flying away from me, so I was safe, but very scared, and I haven't touched the table saw again since then.

I want to get back into woodworking, so I have to get over this fear. I've watched a ton of videos about safe use of table saws, and I know now that my fault was not having a riving knife. I don't know if my saw came with one, but if so, I don't have it now. I tried buying one off Amazon, but it doesn't fit, and I have to return it.

So, it seems that my

The southern part of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail has been extended down south of 117 now, and during the week last week it was open.

I went Saturday, and there were huge gates across the trail with signs that said "Authorized Personal Only". One gate was just north of the 117 intersection, and the other was about 3/4 mi south of 117. There were quite a few cars that showed up to the parking lot on 117, filled with people who wanted to try out the new pavement, only to find that it was all blocked off.

Updates should be shown on this page, but regarding the trail connecting Acton to Concord, it says "estimated
