My grandmother passed away a few months ago in Montreal, Quebec.

I am the liquidator of the estate. When I informed her bank that she passed, I was told to open an estate account. So I did.

They have now informed me that her investment account has been liquidated and asked me where to put the proceeds. I never consented to the stocks being liquidated, as we (the beneficiaries) wanted to hold on to them. When I asked why they were sold they said that was their procedure.

Is this normal? I understand that in theory I can just use the proceeds to buy them back but it seems strange to me. Plus, now I’m not sure if there are additional tax implications.
