Title says it all... I'm getting the AMD 7800x3d and looking at cooler options to minimize sound during light load activities (eg. Gently web browsing).

Yes, it's understood that the cooler is very low wattage and is a common suggestion to get a cheap air cooler and call it a day.

My options are to go with:

  1. Big open air cooler and hope it cools enough passively during a fairly aggressive zero rpm fan curve.
  2. 240mm top mounted AIO, which I assume would be good enough to radiate the heat away without an aggressive fan curve.

Does anyone have a 7800x3d with air cooler and find it runs zero rpm without issue while doing low-duty things like web browsing?

Thanks in advance!

Quick question -- has anyone gone ahead and air-sealed stud bay air returns without replacing it a net-new duct return?

We're working to air-seal the garage, and due to cost concerns & effort vs return/benefit, etc., I was thinking about using something like AL foil tape down the edges where the sheet metal meets the stud (assuming it sticks to wood sufficiently). As well, taping over all the nails themselves, and possibly as an extra step, acoustic sealant and standard vapour barrier over it (then followed by insulation/sheetrock as we're in a northern climate).

Here's an example that I'm referring to: https://imgur.com/a/0YbGYWp in the Garage ceiling.

Okay, so I'd love some external (read: expert) input as I'm on the fence of how to proceed.

Besides gaming (primarily open-world stuff, racing/flight sims, and planning on Cyberpunk, D4, next Elder Scrolls), I use my CPU fairly heavily for multi-thread stuff like Development, Docker/Kubernetes, VMs, etc... Also one day would like to go VR for Alyx and flight/race sims. I have no real need for super ultra quality.

I have been craving a full system build (to Ncase or similar Mini-ITX) but not sure if now is the right time (given external factors).

Current configuration (built it ~5years ago):

  • MSI X87-G45 Gaming (no NVME support which sucks...)
  • Intel i7-4770 4 cores 8 logical @ 3.4 GHz

Hi there!

I'm trying to better understand grains so I can target more effectively in a much more security-oriented way. I have spent considerable amount of time reading through the docs and even perusing the code for the various modules. Perhaps some of you experts can clear up some of my confusion?

It is my understanding that grains are sent from the minion and can be used in targeting. Obviously, that can becomes a concern if you rely on specific ones being passed up (eg. role, etc.)... Especially so if you have the salt-master in an auto-add configuration and a malicious host/minion pretended to be something else resulting in possible pillar exposure. Yes, I

So, out of sheer curiousity, how many of you have contacted your MPP and gotten a response out of them -- Personalized, template, or direct communication.

I have tried contacting mine, Christine Hogarth (Etobicoke—Lakeshore), several times since she was elected, but have yet to get so much as an acknowledgement or response which seems out of the ordinary (yes I know of the past/ongoing events probably adding additional load).

When trying to call, no answer and the voicemail box is full. I do not regularly contact my MPP, but in the past when I have, I have gotten responses usually from days to 2 weeks at most (similar to my MP and councilor)...

I'd love to see what you all see for referen

I'm looking for an adventure (road/gravel) bike starting with 30-60km weekend rides with intentions of longer treks (with possible camping/multi-day adventures).

My price range is ~$1500cad +/- 250-500cad

I've narrowed it down to either the Garneau Garibaldi G2 or the Specialized Diverge E5 Elite (or even last years Diverge Elite DSW).

I am however having a devil of a time trying to determine why the G2 is ~$300-500 cheaper than the Diverge... Both have the same components (Shimano Tiagra), both have carbon forks, frame warranty, etc.

Yes, the Specialized does h

I am finding that I am constantly hitting HTTP(s) endpoints that return JSON-based health/statistics responses...

Are there not any lightweight desktop UI tools out there that allow add endpoints, frequency of polling it, and once you select keys within an example/sample output, it displays a graph over time without storing it?

I don't want to be installing a collector/graphing server on my desktop/laptop for arbitrary (and temporary) data collection.

I was working with a colleague today with validating a linux failover cluster and needed a way of testing a lockup/system failure.

We thought -- why not generate a kernel panic? You can force a blue screen in Windows, there's gotta be a way in linux. So, with a quick lookup we found this:

echo c > /proc/sysrq-trigger as found here: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/66197/how-to-cause-kernel-panic-with-a-single-command

Well, it works. And that really begs the question, how the hell could you stop that? Because seriously... that's scary. a simple echo redirected at a system file and it instantly locks up a linux machine -- it doesn't even log the command to history so it's not ev

Hi there,

I'm looking to create a database that contains a large number of words/short phrases. I would like to be able to report on their frequency and possibly group on one another based on the text itself. Additionally, there may be other meta-tags such as geo or timeseries.

The issue is I'm not sure where to start. I've done tonnes of relational databases including large business applications but it's always been standard logical structures that is (mostly) fully denormalized...

The issue is, I (think I) know that RDBMS may not be the best approach. I've been looking for examples or at the very least, correct terms to perform research but struggling. Might this be a job for NoSQL or a

Hi All,

Just trying to calibrate my internal compass with regards to Windows Server hardening.

My question: How does one best create a hardened and secure golden image for Windows Server

We use NIST recommendations along with the Microsoft Security Compliance Manager and find it to be very helpful as it can generate GPOs but are curious about a specific use case.

Is it safe enough to rely on Domain-based GPOs for security compliance or do you lock down the "local" configuration prior to domain join? What I mean by that is, do you configure Local GPOs and lock down the OS in a strict manner BEFORE you join it to the domain?

We generally stick to pure Domain usage to ensure GPO complian

I understand the real estate market is pretty messed up to begin with, but I am curious: might there be an alternative to MLS/Realtor in that users can post an ad about WTB rather than WTS?

That way, you list your price (for a price) and interested individuals can offer properties based on your offer? I really detest the market and how you have agents listing at unrealistically low prices and then refuse reasonable offers in order to "sell above asking" as a selling tactic.

I would much rather advertise "I have been pre-approved for XXXXXXXXXX, what can I buy"?

Thanks!
