I made this post about a year ago in the unpopular kpop sub and it didn't go that well because people really didn't consider it, i hope this time, on here, it is a little different.
The point of this post is that in general a lot of conversations in this space refer to adult men and women as "the boys / the girls", this form of framing subconsciously signals that the idols in question are not fully grown adults, they need protection, they don't have agency.
I am sure many of you have seen fans act like these things are indeed the case, fans act like they are protectors, like any small negative thing an idol experiences is too much. There is a lot of infantilizing rhetoric going around
I chose that title because everytime there is a conversation regarding the artistry in kpop, if idols are really 'artists' or not, you will always see people go to places like "ofc it is art, it's performance art, whitney houston was an artist even though she didn't write her songs" yada yada yada.
Now tbf, there are two general, foundational views on this.
- Everything related to artistic fields is art, everyone performing it is an artist
- There is a certain treshhold of quality, skill, dedication, etc to transform an activity in an artistic field to art.
In the former pov it goes without saying that anyone is an artist who is linked to a field. I might be an artist when i sin
As the title says, i think collaborations of kpop artists / groups with international artists are in the majority of cases (that i am aware of, ofc) artistically disappointing. In many cases it feels like a lukewarm attempt of reaching a new audience, but not like some truly genuine fusion of artistic sensibilities and care. This isn't fully unique to these types of collaborations, the same can happen when korean artists collaborate too, but there is simply a way higher likelihood of them meeting up, truly talking things through, connecting on some level etc, which is why i mainly focus on collaborations with western artists for this opinion.
Not sure if examples are needed or would be ap
Now that the first posts regarding 'predictions' for the award shows at the end of the year come in, i think it is a good time to talk about this topic.
In kpop award shows like MMA, MAMA, Golden Disc, and more, it is basically a given that winners are largely decided by their commercial success (+ fan voting). This is deemed as normal, and 'fair'. Well, i fundamentally disagree, i think it actually is unfair, it suggests that only the most popular acts release work worthy of appreciation (i'd argue that is the idea of an award, to celebrate a work). It makes awards which arguably should be about the artistic merit into full on popularity contests, something we can easily 'predict' becaus
A few thoughts before i go into the actual argument:
-
I realize that there was a post about music videos not too long ago, though when looking at the body of the post, i felt that it doesn't really go into the same ideas as i will, it talked a lot about 'being boring' instead. (slight callout :D).
-
I will use examples of videos to make a point, this is never meant to be a 'drag' or an attack, so pls for any fan of a group i use as a negative example, don't get angry, thanks :D

This post is looking at it from a kpop pov, ofc one could make similar arguments in general, most mvs lack creativity.

I am going at this from a conceptual pov, any music video can still b
It's really in the title. I think concerts where the music isn't played live by some form of band is dropping the quality of the concert to such a degree that i think it becomes fairly uninteresting to attend it. One could pair this with the idea of (loud) backtracks too, the core idea really is this:
The closer the experience is to just listening to the studio version, the less interest there is to go to the concert. I focus on the intrumentation aspect here because it doesn't get talked about as much (but as i said, the backtrack part definitely adds to it), that is also why i think that my opinion is unpopular. I see generally noone talking about it, music being the same as the studio
When i say 'clearly' i cannot give an exact age, the point is moreso that the issue is more apparent the older they are.
Anyway, the point is that in a lot of conversation about groups you'll hear someone say "the boys / the girls did so well / whatever", in my eyes this form of framing subconsciously signals that the idols in question are not fully grown adults, they need protection, they don't have agency.
I am sure many of you have seen fans act like these things are indeed the case, fans act like they are protectors, like any small negative thing an idol experiences is too much. There is a lot of infantilizing rhetoric going around when it comes to idol talk, and imo the ubiquitou
I know, i know, we just have seen one episode and people are hyped, the episode was quite good even, noone wants to hear about potential problems.
Still, what i have seen in some reactions is a certain level of people being not that excited, and where this imo stems from is an underlying potential problem of the story of the dance.
What would that be? Well it is 'more of the same'. In essence it is a story about factions wanting to get the throne, the usual scheming and broad character archetypes included. That can make for good character drama, no doubt, it can make for spectacle, especially with the dragons present, but it also is a smaller scope than GoT ever was in its focus.

We got 86 unique lists with 39 song mentions (including an OST, but hey :D)
I decided to showcase the top 20 here, if people really wanna see all the song mentions, i might add to it (but i thought it might become too much)

Hello Neverlands!
It is time again to ask the community what their favorite songs by gidle are! The last time i did this is now almost 2 years ago, we got two new group releases since then, i am sure there will be some changes compared to the results back then :D
'I never die' is still somewhat fresh, but i hope people will vote as sincerely as possible anyway!
How would it be done?
Just post your top 10 songs of (g)i-dle in a form like this:
