Since 1999, 128 different players have thrown touchdown passes on back-to-back pass attempts, a total of 328 times. It's a relatively common occurrence. But has a quarterback thrown touchdown passes on back-to-back-to-back pass attempts? Yes, six have done that.

Nobody has thrown four in a row, but four touchdown passes has happened in a span of six pass attempts. And five touchdown passes has happened in a span of ten attempts. Here is the table of highest concentrations of touchdown passes, up to ten^1.

I took the weight of the sacking player each time a quarterback got sacked and summed it up. Now, to be clear, if the same person sacks a given quarterback more than once, that sacker's weight is included once per sack. It also must be noted that sometimes two players are each credited with a half sack. In these cases, the weights of both the sackers are counted. My play-by-play data goes back through the 1999 season, so that's as far back as I went. However, there were three guys near enough to the top that I felt it warranted to go back and manually get the data for the rest of their careers, pre-1999. I did so for Brett Favre (going back through 1991), Drew Bledsoe (going back throu

Volume stats, as everyone knows, increase as the number of games are played. And it takes either three or four games to reach the Super Bowl, depending on the first round bye. Teams that fall short probably played fewer games (but it's possible they also played three).

Anyway, what this has resulted in, as one might guess, is that typically one of the quarterbacks who plays in the Super Bowl ends up being the quarterback that has the most playoff passing yards that season. And it has been that way. Until it suddenly changed.

This season, Matthew Stafford is currently leading with 936 playoff passing yards. Drake Maye would need 404 yards in the Super Bowl to pass him; Sam Darnold woul

Saw this comment https://old.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/1qnh65k/sam_darnold_is_the_8th_qb_to_be_the_backup_in_one/o1tm3cr/ by u/Careful-Button-2633. Had to check.

Ten players named Sam have thrown at least one touchdown pass (regular season or playoffs): Adkins, Baker, Bradford, Darnold, Ehlinger, Etcheverry, Francis, Howell, Vacati, and Wyche. But only eight of them have thrown a touchdown pass in the 2nd or 4th quarter, eliminating Baker and Francis.

Then we need to look at the heights of the receivers that caught those particular touchdown passes. Adkins, Bradford, Darnold, Howell, Vacati, and Wyche are the six that threw a 2nd/4th quarter touchdown pass to a someone under 6'0" tall.

Clearly we'd expect, as the number of Super Bowl appearances increases every year, that the number of combined appearances by playoff teams would also generally increase over time. Especially as the number of playoff teams has also increased over time. This is generally true.

Here's the year-by-year chart: https://imgur.com/a/JKKUQFM

Some interesting points of note:

  1. In 1981, the playoff teams combined for ten previous Super Bowl appearances. The Cowboys were five of them.

  2. The substantial drop in 1986-1988. The 1986 season was the first since 1979 not to feature at least one team with 4 previous Super Bowl appearances, as the Cowboys, Dolphins, Steelers, Vikings, and Raiders all

During each previous season going back through 2007, at least one quarterback threw a pass of 90+ yards. However, this season, the longest pass thrown so far is only 88 yards, thrown by Matthew Stafford. This 18-year streak is far and away the longest in NFL history. The second-longest was the 10 years between 1960 and 1969. Only 47 games remain to get that 90-yard pass.

Dak Prescott, getting a 31-game head start over Patrick Mahomes, had 919 pass attempts before Mahomes got on the board. The differential stayed more or less the same until October 2020, with Prescott peaking at a 1,023 pass attempt lead on 10/4/2020. Mahomes chipped away at it over the next five years, getting with 500 attempts on 11/1/2021, and taking the lead for the first time on Christmas 2024 (Mahomes up by 12 attempts at that point). They've been neck-and-neck since, and exactly even at 4,354 attempts right now. See graph: https://imgur.com/a/nuGPJYf

The graph for career completions is very, very similar, as one would expect. Prescott started with a lead of 602 completions. Same

Here is the table of teammates who played in the most games together. Please note that it is not required that the teammates be on the field simultaneosly (i.e., both play on the same side of the ball), just that they both participated in the same game for the same team. For the two-player combos, I also included the active pair that has played the most games together, which happens to be Kelce and Winchester with 158 games. That's good for 167th place all-time.
