The Intellectual Obesity Crisis: Information addiction is rotting our brains
gurwinder.blog/p/the-intellectual-obesity-crisisThe math is based on assuming 7% annual returns after accounting for inflation (10% gains minus 3% inflation).
For that matter, why would I give $290,000 in 50 years when I could give $8,670,000 in 100 years (through some kind of org that operates after my death)? Or $255M in 150 years? Why is the optimal altruistic strategy not this:
- Build extreme wealth by investing over a long period
- Fix everything
I (25M) have a lot of friends, but I noticed that I mostly spend time with them in the company of groups of 4+ people. This is fun, but I also like to just talk 1-1 sometimes for a while. But the only time I feel like I get the chance to do this is when it happens accidentally. For example, if somebody is driving me from a bigger social event, or if I'm one of the first two people at a gathering. It would be nice if I could do it more often than that. But I don't really know how to arrange it in a way that doesn't feel really awkward. Scheduling a time and place to spend time alone with someone when we've never done that before feels overly intimate to me. I was wondering if other people had
Judge Andy Oldham of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals just cited the SSC post All In All, Another Brick in the Motte (2014) in an opinion. He accused the Bureua of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) of using a motte-and-bailey argument and cited Scott's explanation of the motte-and-bailey. See footnote 8, on page 48:
ATF essentially responded with variation of the motte-and-bailey argument. See Scott Alexander, All in All, Another Brick in the Motte, Slate Star Codex (Nov. 3, 2014), https://perma.cc/PA2W-FKR9

Obesity is bad. It causes a lot of health risks, and reduces life expectancy by 3 years if moderate and 10 years if severe.
Obesity is also a solved problem. Eat fewer calories than you burn and you your body won't put on any excess fat. The way to do that is to stick to eating fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains (which have a low calorie density -- they make you feel more full per calorie so you don't eat as many calories) rather than processed junk food like candy, deserts, soda, etc. Everyone knows t

m.imgur.com/a/KndQa18Lots of people have anecdotally observed that it seems like dating these days in the US at least is particularly difficult for young men. Research seems to confirm this, 51% of 18-29 year old men are single compared to only 32% of 18-29 year old women Whatever truth there may be to other explanations for this phenemenon, the most important reason is because dating is harder for young men because there is in fact more competition on their side of the market.
I dug up Census data from 2019 and
We will never have enough software engineers because the field changes too quickly
whoisnnamdi.com/never-enough-developers/Try searching any common term on any search engine. It will probably tell you that there are 100 million+ results. In fact, if you keep clicking the next page button, you will get to the end of the results in only a few dozen pages of ~10 results each.
As an example, a search for the word "bird" on Google initially tells me that there are 10.1 billion results. As I click through the pages, this number fluctuates, at one point it changes to 8.9 billion. When I get to page 24 it changes to "page 24 of 231 results" and there is no next page. There's a message at the bottom that says:
In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 231 alre
I graduated college and started my first job last year. I applied to a lot of different companies and joined the one that made the best offer. It has been a good first opportunity and I'm grateful for it but I'm 19 months in and I think it's time to start thinking about what my next move will be. I don't want to keep working here forever. The product I'm working on is this company's version of a kind of software that's been around for decades and which hasn't changed much over that time. I find it boring. I want my next job to be something I don't find boring.
The problem is I've found shifting from the new grad way of looking for jobs (where you apply to every new grad role you can find)
There is no need to Trynda-fear
Or cause to shed a Trynda-tear
For Tryndamere is Trynda-near
And soon he will be Trynda-here
Then we’ll sit on the Trynda-pier
And crack open a Trynda-beer
He’ll whisper in my Trynda-ear
And hold me oh so Trynda-near
Then he’ll take off his Trynda-gear
And eye me with his Trynda-leer
I’ll ride his massive Trynda-spear
Till I cannot see Trynda-clear
He’ll stick it in my Trynda-rear
Leave on my face a Trynda-smear
And then he’ll Trynda-disappear
But he’ll be back next Trynda-year
Till then, I will wait Trynda-here
On our sacred Trynda-pier
For my love, my Trynda-dear
My one, my only

Porn has two major advantages over sex. First, it’s easy: The Hub is never more than a keystroke away, whereas even for the Chad Thundercocks of the world, convincing someone to have sex with you takes more effort than that. Second, it’s idealized: The actors in most porn are probably more attractive than both you and the people who are willing to have sex with you; They often find themselves in highly unlikely but arousing situations; And there are never any consequences of whatever they do.
Given these advantages, why does anyone still have sex? It’s a silly question: Porn isn’t real. I am not here to tell you not to watch porn; do whatever you want. But anyone who would chose porn over s
