Basically what I said.

The r8 is a car that “wows” me still every time I see one. The idea of having that backside in my garage gives me joy.

The Porsche is brand new and “one of the best Porsches ever made” it’s also much more affordable as I can lease a new one instead of buying.

I drive about 3500 miles a year. How do you guys weigh up what are ultimately two unnecessary purchases. With one of them having the possibility of catastrophic failure?

In a few weeks I’m going on a rafting trip down the canyon for a week. I agreed to this and paid for it in a moment of craziness after surviving a stroke in November.

I haven’t rafted in 25 years. I haven’t worked out in 8 months and I have some serious anxiety going on. I know once I’m down there it’s bucket list stuff but I’m really struggling with the fear of “what if something goes wrong”.

Any words of wisdom? Encouragement? It’s power rafts so I assume it’s basically just hanging on? the glamping of rafting. Im going to be hot, cold, sandy and miles from a hospital, which im trying not to think about. But it’s hard.

Thanks in advance.

The Phoenix Project

Work Environment

Sorry if this is not appropriate in this sub.

2 weeks ago someone in my family recommended I read “the Phoenix project”. It surprised me because they weren’t even IT people but said it was a wonderful piece of non-fiction fiction about the IT world.

I’m a few hours into the audiobook and it’s amazing. It’s all about the politics and workplace issues that we encounter day to day. Devs blaming sysadmins who blame managers for lack of funding or unrealistic goals.

It follows the lead character through a sudden promotion in the middle of a turbulent time of the business with critical systems failing and new projects needing to be delivered.

Just the few hours I have heard so far are alre

Owner burnout

Business Operations

Hi all, Need some help here figuring things out.

I started 5 years ago as a consultant doing PCI audit remediation and hipaa assistance. Then slowly it grew into a 24/7 helpdesk that I managed on my own for a year. This felt fine at the time as business was growing.

I’m still growing but 5 years in and I’m not yet making 6 figures before tax. I have a service desk manager / project guy / onsite tech (he’s good with customers etc) and he’s being paid below market but it’s basically all I can afford. He gets quite flexible working and unlimited days off which is my way of balancing it out and he seems happy with it.

I also have a remote helpdesk tech for level 1 support, based out of Man

What are people doing for SMB storage (100 users, no large files but 2 small SQL servers), using around 11 TB of storage. I priced out a basic Dell PowerVault ME4 series which seemed reasonable until I added the SAS SSDs at $1400 a drive for 960gb.

With 3 hosts before you know it we are hitting $70k without going crazy on specs.

I have been asked to pull together another option to present, VSAN is going to be the same or more once you account for extra disks, licensing and a storage switch.

Is there something I am missing to bring costs down? Perhaps doing a 2 Host solution with replication between the hosts at 15-30 minute increments? But I haven't done that in 10 years on absolute budg

Hi All, Im a small IT provider, our clients are all around 20-50 employees and I grew by referrals as I’m still not confident at getting in the door. Once I get in the room with the decision makers I can close the deal and our service is personalized and great.

Our clients pay anywhere from 500 to 5000 a month with a 1 year contract that usually renews, haven’t lost one yet. My issue is that I can’t frontload a few months of sales salary.

What kind of commission-only should I be expecting to pay for someone? What if it’s commission + account management (customer checkins etc). Trying to find a ballpark of what’s normal.

Thanks in advance.

Hi all, For background I moved to California in October 2020.

I bought almost $5000 of concert tickets (including ticket fees) in May 2021 for myself and friends from vividseats. They didn’t send me the tickets their website kept saying “we have the tickets and will send them to you soon”, but didn’t.

The concert has now been rescheduled 4 times and is pushed another year to March 2023. At this point we decided to get a refund and book something where we all can make it once Covid has been handled.

California law and vividseats own website says that a rescheduling entitles us to a refund. So I messaged them via the chatbot on their site asking for a refund and it was after hours so sai

Offsite Backup Providers

General Discussion

Hi all, We use Veeam at a few different customers and I love the product so I’m not changing that.

We also use iLand cloud as our offsite destination but I’m not very happy with them and looking to change. I asked them about sending hard drives to seed large backups (something that is quite common) and my account rep seemed unsure of pricing or if they could do it.

My concern of course is that something goes wrong, I need a drive couriered to my site ASAP.

I’m considering moving it in-house to a local datacenter. What are you guys doing?

I need immutable storage options and only about 25-30TB.

Hi All,
I've found a few talks about this but not many "clean" solutions.
I have a dual WAN setup with Path Monitoring for Static Routes on a single virtual router.

Can I create two separate globalprotect gateways, with their own IP ranges completely separate on this same router? That way I could set DNS for VPN1 and VPN2 and in the event of an outage I can direct my users to connect to the other gateway?

Some reading suggests using Policy Based Routing and splitting the WAN interfaces into their own VRs. I really don't want to have to overcomplicate things if possible but will do if necessary.

Thanks in advance!

Hi All,

This sounds basic but I want to run it by you all first. All of my firewall cutovers have been done during downtime over a weekend etc. but I have a client who is a 24/7 callcenter so I am trying to stage the Palo next to their existing Zyxel firewall to reduce downtime.

If I assign the palo a spare public IP and get everything configured (Globalprotect, policies, nat etc) then when ready to cutover, disconnect their old firewall and change my Palo WAN IP will it allow me to do it? Or am I going to hit weird rules in NAT or my VPN portal saying that it cant change due to things relying on it?

Im 99% it will work fine, but never done it this way.

Thanks

Hey all, I’m trying to find good ways to reduce my viewing on twitch. I only really watch one game on twitch but I have probably got 30 subs or more active.

Add to that some donations each month and things are adding up. I’m a long member of many communities like 60 months or so and I feel like I’m giving up on some prestige to drop my subs.

Every now and again I dial it back. But it builds back up over time.

Does anyone have guidance, the money is less a worry than the time I spend distracted while I’m trying to work.

Hi all, My client had a server drive fail and the raid array I guess didn’t do it’s job properly and prevent a bad block or two. Everything is still running fine and new drive is rebuilt. But I still can’t consolidate or backup one of our largest VMs.

I tried manually deleting the CTK files and rebuilding them, didn’t work. Tried running consolidate many times hoping it would make it through but no dice.

It has 5 VMDK attached, only one of them is iterating through numbers though.

Any clever “remove that drive and reattach” stuff? Worst comes to worst I’ll have to do a standalone conversion but that’s gonna take ages as it’s about a 6tb server.

Hoping someone has a good idea by the
