On my way to work this morning, I stopped for coffee at the 7-Eleven downtown near Central School. A group of students in uniform suddenly rushed inside, followed by an older man who appeared to be a school staff member. He was asking the guard to stop them because they had allegedly cut class and jumped over the school wall.

The boys kept trying to escape even attempting to enter the restricted staff area. One managed to run out while the guard chased him. I was already near the entrance, so I stood in the way of the others. I wasn’t trying to be a hero. I was simply watching an older teacher scramble for help while everyone else stood there, unsure whether to intervene.

I first found Reddit during the first few months after my breakup, and honestly, reading other people's stories and sharing my own gave me a weird sense of comfort. Parang hindi ko kailangang dalhin lahat mag-isa.

Then I discovered Threads and got hooked. Ang gaan ng vibe, mas spontaneous, and I truly enjoyed posting there. Since hindi na rin ako active sa Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok, it became my little safe space where I could just exist and be myself.

But lately... parang ang dami nang toxicity. More hate, unnecessary arguments, at kung minsan nakakadrain na lang mag-scroll.

So here I am again, back on Reddit. 😂 Somehow, dito pa rin ako nakakaramdam na at home.

Nostalgic thought lang… grabe talaga yung early internet days no. mIRC, Yahoo Messenger, DALnet, tapos yung time na you can send a text message then it will be posted on a live broadcast channel, may televiewers yung GC nyo era tapos may pa ng PLDT dial-up na pag may tumawag sa landline, disconnect ka agad 😭

Back then I met someone sa mIRC chat wala pang photos, no guarantees, just pure convo and timing. Wala pa yung scammer culture ngayon, kaya mas fearless pa lahat. I didn’t even care kung sino siya IRL at first, basta yung connection felt real. But when I first saw her, DAMN! Ang ganda and I froze, literally.

is it just me or meeting someone online back in the mIRC/DALnet/Yahoo Messenger days felt way more magical than today?

You’d go home from school excited just to check if that one person is online. A simple “asl?” in a channel could already start a whole connection.

And the waiting was part of it sometimes hours, sometimes 1–2 days bago mag-reply kasi di naman lagi online lahat. PC + PLDT dial-up vibe lang, shared computer pa minsan tapos magaaway muna kayo ng kapatid mo for using the phone too long di ka makaconnect sa internet. Hahaha

Then kapag nag-click, lipat Yahoo Messenger era exchange IDs, late-night chats, lyric-heavy statuses, and those “eyeball” meetups that felt like a big deal
