Do you have any experience writing ALT-text or any other image descriptions for accessibility purposes? (Either professionally or just on your personal website or social media.) Please fill in our survey!

We aim to make the results publicly available, and will use them to help improve existing image description guidelines. This study is part of a larger project. Next to this survey we are carrying out interviews with both image describers and description users.

We are doing this together with different organisations who have experience supporting blind and visually impaired people, and we also have blind people provi

We're in the middle of PhD vacancy season, but I have no idea where to post positions in this subreddit. So I thought I'd open a new thread.

I'm a researcher trying to figure out how negation works in Chinese. I don't have any knowledge of the language itself. Initially I thought it was just 不 (bù) and 没 (méi). But then I looked a bit further, and in Google Translate's dictionary I found a whole list of candidates. This is the set I came up with:

kindCharacters
no/not (yet)莫, 不, 未, 无, 没, 非, 毋, 弗
lack缺乏, 缺少, 缺, 欠, 差, 欠缺, 悭
nobody/nowhere'没有人, 无处, 到处都无, 无价值的东西
have_not/without没有, 未, 没, 未曾, 未尝
nothing无, 零, 虚无
none莫, 毫无, 毫不, 一个也没有, 一点也不

But then when I look at these characters in context, not all of them seem to be used as negations. Here's some examples that I found (with Google Trans

I tried to pip-install ufal.udpipe on OS X 10.12, with the latest version of pip, but it failed in the source compilation stage. However, compiling the C code separately does work. Hence, the problem seems to be with pip; somehow it modifies the environment in such a way that the compilation process breaks. However, the module does install successfully on Ubuntu, also using pip.

I contacted the author and we can't figure it out. Here is the GitHub issue. Does anyone know how to proceed from here?

Does anyone have a good reference on adjective polarity? Specifically I'd like a paper explaining phenomena like (1). It feels like I'm looking for a needle in a haystack..

1a. John is shorter than Mary ==> John and Mary are both short.
1b. John is taller than Mary =/=> John and Mary are both tall.

Who was the first to describe this phenomenon? Is there any intuitive explanation why negative expressions usually feel marked?

I need to visually inspect a large dataset, and I am currently using the arrow keys (UP & DOWN) to navigate through the file. The problem is that it's just a bit too fast for me. At 75% of the current speed, I could just keep pressing the DOWN key and still be able to judge all the rows, whereas now I have to release the key and press it again once my eyes have caught up. Is it possible to somehow change the scrolling speed?
