Meet John Doe

SpoilerGeneral Discussion

Directed by Frank Capra (1941) w/ Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper

The film starts with Stanwyck, a reporter, writing a fake letter to the editor about a guy who thinks the world’s gone wrong and gonna jump from the top of city hall.

Then it goes over too big and she has to find a fake John Doe (Cooper).

Here’s where I’m looking for comments:

Despite the efforts of the redoubtable Stanwyck, the film devolved quickly into stunning sappiness where millions of Americans are enthusiastically clamoring for John Doe just bc his whole entire message is “the guy next door is not a bad egg”.

I found this to be unspeakably absurd and even cynically manipulative.

Or maybe just catastrophically na

If gravity is a constant, why are gnats (or other invisibles) not circling bowling balls?
