The U.S. government destroyed a small mountain settlement called Alpine Hills in the Appalachian Mountains during an operation known as the Perkins Experiment. It involved about twelve aircraft dropping gas bombs that released a foul-smelling, nauseating liquid over the area. As a result, homes and businesses were abandoned, and the ground was coated with a black, pus-like substance.
