I currently just finished up a project where I am first author and will be submitting it soon. I anticipate having submitting another first author publication before applications are due and another First author publication will likely still be in prep. That being said, will having them at least submitted or under review help at all? I figure there is a major difference between an accepted publication and one that hasn’t yet been accepted and in press or under revise and resubmit.

Sorry for the double questions on this sub Reddit, just been doing some heavy thinking about how to boost my CV last minute as application season is finally upon us. I’ve seen people come in with 12+ conferences, but I’ve also seen successful people get admitted into a fully funded program with a lot less. Is there any kind of metric for knowing how much is enough? Of course there’s also the quality of the conferences that you are attending, such as regional, national, and local and whether or not you were first author on those posters or oral talks. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated as this is one of the parts of my CV that I am very self-conscious about.

Just want to know if there’s anyone that has any experiences that may be comforting. Given that this cycle or any cycle for that matter has a lot of uncertainty, I would like to know if persistence does ultimately pay off. I have been in the research game for several years now (2 years part time, 2 years full time), but of course there are people out there with much more. I aim to put my best foot forward this application season in hopes to finally land at least one offer. I was wondering if anyone had any similar experiences where you had no interview offers or little to no success and had a better outcome the following year. Also, any wisdom and advice would be greatly appreciated.
