I have recently started a new campaign in my sector, and have subjected my players to new character generation rules that I have been tinkering with for a while. I present them to you all here for your amusement. Please comment vociferously.

1. Roll 4d6 keep the best 3 dice, six times, and allocate the attributes wherever you like. It produces some pretty strong results, but that's ok.

2. Backgrounds:

I like the SWN:Revised backgrounds and the Growth/Learning tables, but I much prefer the old SWN Core (1e) Rules and their Backgrounds. I adapted the old backgrounds to the Revised rules some time ago, and decoupled them entirely from class selection. Each PC gets 4 background ski

Proteus Sector p. 53 has "Non serialized spike drive cores" listed as a moderately illegal good for smuggling purposes.

What is a serialized spike drive? Is it a drive that doesn't have a registered sensor signature? Help!

Using the CWN/AWN classless Edge rules for my newest SWN game. So far, it seems to be a hit. But a question has arisen now that the characters have levelled up:

If an Edge gives a bonus skill level, does that work like a Focus bonus skill level during character advancement: 3SP?

Just ran the start of a second campaign last night. I had a Ranger and Bard in the party. Went well. I have some questions though that my players brought up, and I am a little bewildered about a few things. Help me hive mind!

1. How long does it take the ranger to make a Herbal Remedy? Is it one per round, with each remedy lasting no more than 3 rounds? Can they make a remedy while in combat? (I've only recently come to understand the difference between combat rounds and other rounds. It works, though I suppose "3 D&D ten-minute turns" would work too.)

2. The ranger rolled a 2 on their starting Talent: they chose to do 1d12 damage with daggers. I'm ok with this, but it defi

Slowly going through my new AWN acquisition, and I have two thoughts/questions:

  1. If mixing and matching the different *WN games and using Edges, it might be useful to have a baseline of 4 Edges (Gifted Survivor), and having Partial Psychics, and other Partial Classes (CWN Magic users, Sun Blades, etc) count as 2 Edge picks. Thoughts?

  2. Would it be advisable to have Gifted Survivors (4 Edges) who are also Forged By Fire? No starting Edges, but a total of 5 Edges by Level 5. Two at level 2, then one at levels 3, 4, and 5? That might get a little excessive...

Despite my space combat rules and space privateering and piracy proclivities, my first true RPG love is mecha: Heavy Gear, Robotech, Mekton Zeta, and even Mechwarrior (1e and 2e, I'm old).

The rules in SWN:R for mecha are pretty solid, but I was noodling around with them recently and noticed that they are the only rules where there are AP values for heavy weapons, and the only rules where the vehicles (mecha) have AR ratings that reduce heavy weapon damage.*

I've also seen that in CWN and AWN, vehicles, heavy weapons, and armor are all rather different than in SWN:R.

My question is this: is there a way to normalize mecha armor ratings with the rest of the *WN high tech universe? Is it

It sounded easy enough: board a starship cruise liner, steal a statue, and make sure no one is the wiser until delivery. It turns out there was more to the Starlight job than sipping martinis and taking in the shows. I should have clued in once I saw the itinerary; or by the time I was on safari on Amaterasu. By the time I was in for thirty thousand at the casino on Belobog, it was too late. Well, it was a fun trip either way. Five out of five stars. Would cruise again.

The Starlight Caper is a self-contained mini-campaign for a group
