Like many, I’ve been rewatching Band of Brothers and related content given the anniversary. To use BoB as the main example, the soldiers have an eclectic mix of weapons - M1 carbines, Garands, Thompsons, sometimes pistols (many soldiers but not all seem to carry these, and at least one is portrayed to be using a pistol sent to him from the United States), and a mix of heavy weapons.

I understand that machine gun and bazooka teams were assigned during training, so that’s a little bit different. But how was it decided which soldiers carried an M1 carbine versus a Garand, or who carried the Thompsons (or grease guns)? How were pistols assigned, if at all? Did the preferences of the soldiers m

Wikipedia has the total number of German dead at around 225,000 (100k military, 125k civilian) and Soviet at 81k dead. Beevor shares stories in his book of civilians and soldiers alike buried in collapsed buildings, trapped in flooded U-Bahn lines (though he notes that the deaths attributed to this are likely exaggerated), left in shell holes and trenches that were subsequently filled in, etc. He also notes that even today, bodies are found every year in the Spreewaldpl around Halbe.

So my question is, how and when were the dead dealt with in Berlin after the end of the battle? And as a corollary, how were they dealt with in various other fortress cities of the Eastern Front?

As stated in the title. This has been a popular view since at least GW’s second term, but I am curious if it has any basis beyond disdain for Dubya and Cheney’s corporate connections.

Did Cheney have more power (soft or otherwise) than other VPs? Was he actually an unusually dominant figure behind the scenes of GW’s presidency? If so, is this actually documented in some way?

For purposes of the 20-year rule, let’s limit this to GW’s first term only.

Hello! Hoping someone will have some input here.

Our son is 7.5 months old and not a great sleeper. We’ve decided to sleep train him using full extinction as that method worked like a dream with our daughter (now 2.5 yo). He has been sleeping in the snoo after falling asleep with either myself or his mom and snuggling/snacking.

Last night was night 1 and he cried for 45 minutes before we called it as he was just crying harder and harder.

Tonight, night 2, we went about an hour but noticed that he kept falling asleep just for a second and then he would wake himself up, usually by moving his arms, and start crying harder.

In the snoo his arms are loosely contained in the sack so he’s n

Alternatives to Hatch?

2 Years Old ✌️

Our daughter uses a Hatch, and we’ve been going through the stories on it, which she enjoys. The problem is that the Hatch app is complete garbage. It doesn’t let you sequence multiple stories from the same collection, it doesn’t tell you how long is left in a story when playing, and it’s very easy to accidentally turn the story off while doing normal navigation in the app.

We are looking for alternative that will let us play her some bedtimes stories but that doesn’t require so much babysitting. We also want to avoid having to do it via Bluetooth if possible, as that has its own problems.

Let me know if you have any thoughts, I really appreciate any help or insight!

I finished the last book. My understanding was that it was the conclusion, but now I’m seeing a lot of talk about another duology possibly being written? My recollection is that Bakker didn’t sell well and that he doesn’t have a publisher.

Anyway I guess I’m asking … what is the status of any future books? Has Bakker given any recent updates?

What was Carl’s revelation in book 3?

SpoilerBook 7: Inevitable Ruin

Spoilers all but question regarding something in book 3

Ok so in chapter 23 of The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook, just before Katia kills Hekla, Donut is screaming at Eva and Hekla regarding their plan with Katia. Then we have this passage:

It was starting to dawn on me why Donut was having such a visceral reaction to this. The monumental revelation hit me like a goddamned truck, but we didn’t have time to deal with it now.

They never discuss this again in this book.

My assumption is that the revelation is that Carl realizes that Donut knew about Bea’s plan to get rid of her and is reacting to Katia’s friends turning on her so violently because of Bea not caring about her as much as D

General question about the crawl and its lore

SpoilerBook 7: Inevitable Ruin

Ok so forgive me for a possibly stupid question, but in the crawl we have some well-established lore regarding a large number of gods, the history of the various levels (in particular the story levels), etc

Is that all scripted by the crawl AI? Is there any basis to any of it outside of the crawl? Are the gods and such persistent between crawls, or do they only “wake up” when a crawl is active?

This seemed overall pretty straightforward but there are some things, like the Nothing, that don’t seem to work in my brain. Like is it an actual place within the game, or is it just a line of code from the AI that turns god-programs feral?

So with The Devils coming out in a month or so, I decided to do a reread of all the books in the Circle of the World. I’ve seen a lot of references here to the next trilogy, and I am just wondering if Abercrombie has stated whether he’s going to return to the First Law universe, or if people just assume that he will? Based on the description, The Devils seems to me to be an entirely new setting.

Anyway, you have to be realistic about things but I’m hoping to see the clash of resurgent magic and industry in a future First Law book.

Hello! My mother is a very experienced quilter who has (seemingly) everything. I’m hoping for some ideas for little stocking stuffer type gifts, the kind of thing that even a longtime quilter would be happy to get. I’ll say up front that one common idea is for personalized tags for her quilts and she already has those.

Thank you for the help!

I’ve seen all the regulars and a lot of the uncommon stuff, just curious if anyone has run across something new on Tubi (or YouTube or wherever) that isn’t seeing much discussion.

Help with nap training 1 year old

Hello! We have a wonderful 1 year old daughter who sleeps like a champ at night. We had a few false starts with naptime sleep training but around 9 months we did extinction (gentler methods did not work) and we have been solid ever since.

However, she is a contact nap only girl. We have gotten her to nap independently only a couple of times in her life, and now she has a year of reinforcement. We are trying to move toward crib naps, but so far it’s not working. Hoping for advise.

Here’s what we are currently doing:

  • keep existing nap routine (snack, sleep sack, story, singing/rocking/bouncing for a bit)
  • put her down in her crib with the same phrase e
