I’m rather new and inexperienced at all this, but I just thought I’d share my experience, as a data point I suppose.

So technically my family was irreligious at home, but for complicated reasons I went to a conservative Evangelical school for about seven years, until I was sixteen. It was the usual fare: Bob Jones textbooks, political conservatism, young earth creationism and –of course—homophobia. They didn’t actually harp on the gay stuff too much, but I remember vividly when it came up in the fourth or fifth grade.

Someone (another student I think) said gay people go to hell, and I –being rather naive and uneducated—said “no, wait, that can’t be right, Jesus loves people.” So the instru

This is a gripe post I thought people here may find amusing.

I'm working on my dissertation and a review as a component of that. My gene of interest is very widely conserved within the family I study, but I was trying to see if another article or review had already listed out which viruses in this family do/do not have this gene and a specific domain.

I was having some trouble finding an article that fit the bill exactly, so I thought I might try using one of the chatbots to see if they could find something I overlooked. ChatGPT found some (real!) articles, but ones that I had already found and weren't quite what I was looking for.

So I decided to try Claude instead, and that quickly b

Greetings. I am looking for advice on the bioinformatics for an upcoming RNA seq / RIP-seq experiment. Briefly, I want to determine what RNA transcripts my RNA-binding protein of interest binds. My planned approach is to conduct my experiment as normal, including appropriate IP controls and isolate RNA from input lysate and immunoprecipitate. We will send out somewhere for NGS to determine that our workflow is generating sequenceable RNA, etc.

Anyways, our lab is financially running on fumes, so I'm trying to stretch our budget as much as possible while still doing this experiment.

Most NGS providers do offer Bioinformatic analysis, but it tends to be rather expensive (at least for people

A colleague recently submitted a manuscript and I was surprised to see myself listed as a middle author. Although I had many conversations with the first author about their project and provided some scientific/ technical advice, I don't remember actually doing anything myself (writing or experiments) to contribute to it.

Should I

a) respectfully ask to be removed

or

b) shut the hell up and take the freebie?

As someone who is not a political philosopher, I see a key advantage of federal systems in how they moderate national politics by delegating certain powers to individual states. This separation of powers is generally accepted when it comes to routine governance, but it becomes more contentious when dealing with civil and personal rights.

Take the issue of abortion, for example: regardless of where one stands personally, many people feel disturbed when any state adopts laws they find morally unacceptable, even if it’s not their own. Meanwhile, the federal government retains control over interstate commerce and other national affairs, though these boundaries have blurred over time.

How do yo

Greetings all. I've noticed that some of my acrylamide gels have a transcluscent 'second' front that migrates about 1-2cm above the bromophenol blue dye front. Additionally, when it reaches them the second front quishes together the25 and 20 kDa standards, as shown in the photo. I find this to be very interesting because these two markers are well separated before the second front reaches them, but then they get squished back together. It's not a big deal but I would like to sort it out if I can.

My first thought was that the lower buffer was acidifying and maybe retarding

Hi all. Per the title I'm seeking recommendations far-red nuclear counterstains. Something that permanently stains the nuclei like Dapi or Hoescht would be great. Even better would be something that doesn't cost a lot, but I know that may be unavoidable.

I'm hoping to pair it with AF 405, AF 488, and AF 555/594.

Cheers.
