I’m not complaining about not getting enough matches (though I haven’t been), I totally accept that could be on me. I’m talking about the things that are pretty obviously related to the design of the app and it’s algorithm.

The biggest thing that seems really weird to me is that I just don’t seem to be getting shown the people who have liked my profile. Over the last two weeks of being on the app, I’ve had a stack of some forty odd people in my likes and even if I swipe until I run out, I don’t match with anyone and only reduce the number by a few. I don’t pay so I can’t see the likes but the deduction is pretty obvious, I can’t be being shown the people who have liked my profile.

I’m about to move and take a massive pay cut, and both of those things are making seriously question if I *need* a crazy expensive, crazy loud, crazy heavy tube amp head. Don’t get me wrong, I adore my Rockerverb, but the idea of being able to sell it, and get a backpack size amp that sounds nearly identical with about a grand to spare seems really tempting.

Which makes me wonder, how do people feel they compare? I’m not sure which one I’d get, but probably the tour baby. The dirty channels seem very similar, but the cleans less so. I’m of two minds about this, part of me likes the idea of having a crazy high headroom pedal platform clean channel, but part of me will miss the vintage cha

I just got an espresso machine and it’s suddenly become very apparent that I’m getting substantial retention while changing the grind settings, especially when going from pour over to espresso. I’ll get crazy channeling when I do that, and it breaks my heart to grind perfectly good beans just to purge the grinder. I just want to be able to go back and forth between pour over and espresso without feeling guilty.

I’m wondering if anyone has any tips on mitigating this or ways to purge that minimize waste. Barring that I’d at least be curious how much people find they need to grind to purge. I did a gram previously, but it was not enough.

Like a lot of people I’ve learned to not take tasting notes too seriously. I get that it’s a mixture of marketing, rough indications of what to expect and a fairly developed skill. I taste what I taste in a coffee and don’t worry too much.

This morning I brewed a cup using an onyx honey process coffee from the Aponte village in Columbia, which had a green apple tasting note. This is maybe the third cup I’ve made with it, and previously I definitely got malic acidity but not a distinct apple flavor.

I’m pretty new to this so I don’t know if it’s just that the beans have finally rested enough (they were roasted on the 10th and have a lot of gas still) or if I did something different today,

I’m a medium beginner in the coffee world. I’ve gotten a good grasp on my aeropress, and I’m dipping my toes into pour over with a switch. I feel like I understand a lot of the basics of flavor and extraction, but I can’t for the life of me get a satisfactory answer about what it means to have clarity. For context I’m a chemist so I’m maybe a bit more obsessed with mapping my experience with coffee to physically measurable properties than most people, but still.

To some extent, I understand that some of what people mean is how strongly the unique flavor notes are present in the coffee, like if the beans have a strong peach note a brew with better clarity would have that peach flavor coming

Admittedly something of a clickbait title, but it still accurately describes a super interesting discovery I just made. In short I found that with a higher quality grinder I need to grind way finer than I used to with a bad grinder, which was counterintuitive and took diving into some nerdy science to land on it.

I recently got a few new toys between Christmas gifts and treating myself, including a DF54 and a fellow prismo. Problem was, that doing everything as close to how I used to with my crappy cuisinart grinder I was getting incredibly bitter cups. I’m talking straight up soap. I tried different temperatures, doses, grind settings etc but was not even close to a good cup.

Here’s the

For a long time I’ve been a huge fan of dark roasts. I love thick, oily, earthy cups. I have been pretty much exclusively buying Sumatran dark roasts for years now. But as I’ve been learning more about coffee I’ve felt like I should experiment a bit more so I got a different dark roast. It smelled good, it was freshly roasted by a well regarded local shop, everything indicated I’d like it.

I absolutely hate it. I’ve been playing with my process some (aeropress) but no matter what, all I can think when I taste it black is “oh this is why coffee people hate on dark roasts.” The only notes I get are bitterness, ash and wood. If I’m being charitable maybe it tastes like someone is yelling “cho
