I have a Thinkpad p1 gen 4 but it gets quite hot, the keyboard can burn your fingers when rendering some plugins. I was wondering if there is any good Windows PC laptop that can run avid at a decent speed but not burn my fingers.

I know about Avid's qualified systems but it doesn't mention anything about heat. I am ok not using a qualified system since I have used regular PCs in the past and it was fine.

I don't want a MacBook.

If any of you have been using Avid Media Composer with Apple Silicon, you know about the issues. Unless you have a basic setup, you can expect endless problems. Want to install BRAW AMA Plugin? It crashes. Have an ultra studio? Good luck getting it to work in Avid! Have audio plugins? Keep your fingers crossed. These issues are due to Avid not performing well under emulation. Apple uses ARM, also known as Apple Silicon chips.

But you're already familiar with all this.

So, yesterday Microsoft announced that they are switching their laptops to Qualcomm hardware, including their Surface line and many new laptops from companies like Lenovo and Dell. This is the new trend in the industry. Consi

I was about to throw away an old Lenovo laptop I had.

A 10 year old laptop. 12gb ram. i5.

I use a macstudio m1 ultra. 128gb ram as my main machine.

Installed Avid 2024.3 on both.

Guess what....

Avid launches FASTER on the 10 year old PC. I can't believe this crap. Moving around, opening clips is about the same speed. Using DNX media.

I knew Avid was buggy and unoptimized on Apple Silicon but I didn't expect it to be THAT BAD.

Is Avid not even trying anymore on Macs?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Avid Media Composer Discontinued Following Evaluation of Profitability by STG
In a strategic move aimed at streamlining operations and focusing resources on high-growth areas, Avid Technology, Inc. has announced the discontinuation of its flagship video editing software, Avid Media Composer. This decision comes after a comprehensive evaluation of the product's financial performance by Avid's parent company, STG.
Avid Media Composer has long been recognized as a pioneering tool in the field of video editing, setting industry standards for over three decades. However, recent assessments of its profitability have prompted Avid and STG to reevaluate their product port

Blackmagic hardware on Mac using M1, M2 or M3 just plainly don't work.

Every time I plug the hardware I get beachballs and worse.

Avid blames Blackmagic but people don't seem to care since the same hardware runs fine on Premiere and Resolve on the same machine.

There is a very angry thread on the avid forums here.

Is anyone running AJA hardware without issues or is it the same?

What do you guys recommend apart from using the "fullscreen" HDMI mode?

Avid seems pretty flat now. Height was in 2010 and has been declining.

Premiere seem the opposite. Steadily increasing since around 2010. (Final Cut 7 was killed in 2011)

Resolve has been increasing fast since 2017.

Final Cut has been declining since 2011. I wonder why!

My thoughts. It makes sense although with all the negativity I hear towards Premiere, you would think it would actually decrease in numbers but we see the opposite.

Dear Avid Titler+

A belated Happy Birthday! Two months ago you turned five years old. Can you believe it? And what a tremendous five whole years it's been! From your first stable release in December 2018 to almost letting us highlight text where we're actually pointing in February 2024. It sure makes you think. Five years from now, who knows? Maybe you will even be able to cope with line spacing! Developing a tool that writes actual text can be incredibly challenging, but you sure are a product of five whole long years of intense development, and of course that's just after the first stable release.

Single solo editor situation.

I have a pegasus raid (32TB) at home, several other crappy RAIDS (40TB), other external drives (30TB) some SSDs (around 10TB) when working on a laptop. They are all about 90% full.

Data keeps coming and I want to find a cost effective solution to ARCHIVE video projects. Already have a copy of everything online but need something at home too.
This is a solution to keep at home, so no rack or anything like that. I dont want a NAS either.

I want to add 50TB or maybe 100TB.
What do you suggest?

Also, I dont need it to be super fast since this is for archiving projects but also not super slow in case I want to bring something back.

Since Kyno is dead I have been looking for a replacement. I see that Adobe Bridge supports metadata, can see subfolders as one flat like Kyno does and can add and edit metadata.

I tried adding a few keywords but it worked with some files and with others i got a "Cannot apply metadata error". File was a quicktime.

Still new to Bridge but I was wondering if someone had success with it and Premiere.

I think Kyno had some nice features like sending files to Premiere and keep the keywords as metadata but not sure if Adobe Bridge can do that.

Any tips or experiences?

So I met with our team of editors and we made the decision to move all remaining teams using Avid to Premiere. They are all working on short form commercials and long form docs.

I compiled a list of reasons and common complaints by our editors and wanted to share. They are in no particular order.

- No scene detection.
- Color tools are slow to operate and outdated. There is no Hue vs Sat etc.
- No preview when hovering mouse over thumbnails.
- No easy proxy generation and fast switching to masters in Avid Ultimate, just Enterprise.
- No alternative to media encoder. Avid's background processing tool is buggy and unreliable.
- Too much friction to bring media in. Yes, we

Still no Apple Silicon support after 3 years. 2023.12 came out a few days ago and it's another year without it.

In the summer of 2022 I was told by an Avid rep it was almost there.

Instead we get some basic updates and bug fixes.

https://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/WhatsNew_MediaComposer_v23.12.pdf

At this point we use Avid for historical reasons.

Here are the things I wish were better.

- Color. It's old and clunky.
- Submixes.
- A way to make a basic title without getting PTSD.
- Scene cut detection.

The competition is kicking ass and Avid looks like it's becoming IBM. Having

Their last blog entry is from 2 years ago. No updates, no answers to support tickets. Signiant has not released a "Kyno Pro" or any kind of replacement. They have not said it's dead either.

Is Kyno dead?

So what are the alternatives for the solo editor who doesn't want to buy 5 iconik licenses?

I can grab links to specific messages in the desktop version of Apple Mail. I use Logseq to open my org files and I see the links which do open the mail app. But the message is not opened.

If I open them on a different desktop machine they do open the same message, just not on iOS.

Is there a way to do this? Maybe using a different program? I am open to anything.

I am thinking of moving to mu4e and I was wondering if there is a way to have it group newsletters like "Inbox for Gmail" used to do or like https://sparkmailapp.com does.

Your regular contacts show up in the inbox and you don't have to do much for only real emails appear there. But also real emails from contacts you don't know about show up. I assume they read the emails and do some type of automatic filtering.

Is this possible in mu4e and if so, now?
