My team has a number of private packages that we need to install in Docker containers. We currently store wheels in S3 and have a tool that we copy into the container which implement’s pip’s interface but which checks our S3 store before checking PyPi. The tool authenticates with S3 by generating a short-lived token so that we don’t have long-lived credentials in the container. That tool installs all of our packages, public and private, when building the container.

This works well but we’re finding that we’re writing a lot of bespoke code that reimplements features in pipenv like splitting between development and released packages or taking care of setting up venvs.

The goal of this language was originally to be annoying to use given that several commands change behavior based on the types they work over but as I continued to work I found its methods of referencing data much more interesting.
