Wouldn't consumers who value a product more or perceive a greater utility from a product be willing to pay more for a product? Seems like this just increases consumer surplus for existing fans who would have bought the product already and create perceived barriers to consumption in those who aren't very interested to begin with.

Edit: By "perceived barriers to consumption in those who aren't very interested to begin with" I mean that if a consumer chooses to opt out initially due to lack of interest, then the consumers will feel like they missed out on value later on i.e. sunk cost fallacy.

My teacher simply called the practice "circular pricing" and said that the practice is not allowed anymore in the U.S., but I couldn't find a more scholarly/legal name for the practice.

The practice is essentially:

Step 1: Have a large business with a lot of funds and capital.

Step 2: In a specific area/state, make the prices of all your products lower than what your competitors can sell them for.

Step 3: Wait until all of your competitors go out of business.

Step 4: Raise prices in that monopolized state.

Step 5: Rinse and repeat.

I started learning about this topic yesterday, but it seems everyone is quite politically motivated when it comes to this topic. You have some people saying that the 2019 Bolivian crisis is an example of the west essentially using cold war tactics to stop the spread of socialism. Then you have one side that denies any U.S. involvement and denies the existence of any coup from within the military. I'm guessing the truth lies somewhere in the middle, or maybe not. I'm not sure.

I feel like there's a lot of conflicting information when it comes to antioxidants. Not many academic or medical organizations accept the idea that antioxidants have a noticable effect in humans. It seems like the benefits come from the foods themselves which tend to be fruits and vegetables? Is it worth it to eat foods with specific antioxidants if my other nutritional needs are already met?
