I’m beginning my career and looking to invest in a tripod that could last me for awhile. B&H has a solid deal on the Aktiv8 head + Flowtech 75 legs (total $2,300).

This seems to be a very competitive price for the quality, but I’m wondering if it’s worth investing that much in a 75mm system or if I should bite the bullet and save up for an 100mm bowl (or look for cheaper, used alternatives).

I currently shoot on the FX6 and Pyxis (rigs weighing between 10-15lbs). But I can imagine getting up to 20lb in the near future, especially with large zoom lenses.

I’m also looking at Miller, but I’m much less familiar with their offerings, if anyone has recommendations. Thanks!

I plan to make a for-profit web series that dramatizes real police interrogation transcripts, with actors playing the real life figures. Interrogation analysis is a popular genre on Youtube, where real interrogation footage is show and dissected (presumably acquired through FOIA requests). These channels are typically monetizing the content.

My question is, is the legality of having actors dramatize this different than showing the actual footage? Are there particular laws that are being violated by this concept, or is the concern more related to defamation? Additionally, do I need to change the names of the accused and/or the law enforcement officers?

I’m looking to upgrade to a set of cine primes in the low/mid budget range ($5,000-$10,000). Generally, I’m looking for fast lenses that are versatile but not overly clinical. I generally shoot narrative content but also do commercials and some doc work.

I’ve found a good deal on the DZO Arles, but also open to other new or used suggestions. I’ve heard mixed things on DZO’s quality control but love how fast they are and their fall-off for a relatively affordable price.

I was watching S1E12, and noticed in one shot there’s an entire light dome visible in the shot.

It’s kind of funny to see such a glaring error in one of the most meticulously crafted shows ever made. Of course, it’s not really their fault, since the show was framed for 4:3 and only expanded to 16:9 years later in the remaster, so that part of the image was never supposed to be seen.

Honestly, I’m surprised the remaster doesn’t have such errors more often. Has anyone else noticed any equipment or other weird things in the 16:9 version? There’s a few scenes where it’s clear to me the show wasn’t shot for widescreen, but it’s mostly a really well done reframe.

Pyxis 6K vs Canon C70

Camera Question

I'm looking to upgrade my kit and have narrowed it down to a few options. For context, I'm still using a BMPCC 4k that I got in college, along with a set of EF lenses. However, I've been hitting the limit of its usefulness and often get jobs where I wish I had a better package without the need to rent. I mainly do narrative films.

My main goal is a step up that will let me shoot just about anything I want, but I'm not super concerned about larger budget projects, where renting a better camera would still be my go-to. I'm mainly looking in the $2,000-4,000 range, but have the room to go higher if it seems worth it.

A new Pyxis 6K with L-mount is going for around $2,400. Meanwhile, a used C7

I just watched Superman and it was great: very well made and a great understanding of the character. However, one aspect that seemed underwhelming was the original score.

It was perfectly serviceable, but also very forgettable (the only parts that stick are when Williams’ theme is used).

I’m pretty sure something went really wrong with the score. John Murphy was initially hired to compose it, but the final track credits on the album show that David Fleming redid the majority of it (he has nearly double the tracks that Murphy does).

Fleming’s tracks sound like competent but uninspired Zimmer knock-offs (which makes sense, since Fleming is a protege of Zimmer). Meanwhile, Murphy’s tracks

I recently wrapped my first low-budget feature film and I'm currently in the middle of post-production. The film has a few scenes set in a car that were shot on green screen that will require keying. Where is the best place to find trustworthy VFX artists on a budget? It’s about 3-4 minutes of car interiors where the side windows need to be keyed out. I can pay $500, but there’s room for negotiation if this is unreasonably low. Since it's a low budget project, I'm not necessarily looking for full-time professionals, just someone with experience and ability. Thanks!

And for folks who have gone through this before, would $300-400 be a reasonable fee to offer for something of this scope (3-4 minutes of car interiors where the side windows need to be keyed out) or is that too low at any experience level? Since it's a low budget project, I'm not necessarily looking for full-time professionals, just someone with experience and ability. Thanks!

I'm finishing up my second low-budget feature film and I'm currently looking for a composer (paid). Where do you typically go to find dependable composers? Also, for a super low-budget film, what would be a reasonable payment to offer? For reference, my DP and most of the cast was paid $800.

For reference, the film is a psychological thriller and the score (as with most films of the genre) is crucial to the film's tone and tension.

I'm directing my first feature film and we're approaching picture lock. However, I feel like I'm always second guessing it. Just like most filmmakers, I could sit here tweaking minor edits forever and going back and forth on them.

How do you decide when to let it go and lock picture?

My friend received $5000 for a Metcalf this summer. The money has been deposited into his account. The amount of hours indicated in the email would work out to roughly $12/hr.

My friend is a graduating senior. What would the consequences be of just not doing the internship? There was no signed contract and he will have already graduated. How would the university attempt to recoup the $4000 paid?
