So... background details. Right now I'm running an old mini-pc as a pfsense router, and it's old enough that it's been having weird problems that don't show up in any logs... sudden latency spikes, web interface locking up, etc., all without CPU or ram usage going higher than 30%. Nothing game-breaking... wife works from home so as long as the internet works, we're usually fine, but I'm frustrated and have wanted to do something to try to fix it. For a while, the plan was to put OPNSense on it and see if that worked, but there's a lot of setup that'll need to be done for the way I've got my network set up and I haven't had time to take down the network for a while, install a new OS on the bo
So, I'll admit, headphones are something I've generally avoided. Got some good bookshelf speakers everywhere speakers are needed, and I've got some touch-sensitivity issues that keep me from using the headphones I do have for terribly long sessions. Still, the Philips SHP9500's have been good enough for me: Audio quality is pretty solid (prior to the bookshelves, they were my best), they're light, flexible, comfortable, and last. But I have a problem I've been running into, namely, that some movies and shows and the like (e.g. Andor) have the dialog so quiet compared to the other noises that I've had to crank my bookshelves way up to hear it... to the point where my neighbors can hear it,
It seems more and more people are considering Linux, in light of all the nonsense elsewhere. It seems a good time, too: Nvidia should finally start working decently well, features like HDR are getting real development, and proton support for games seems to work for almost everything that doesn't involve an invasive anticheat system. For average home users, Linux, collectively, seems to have reached a point where it has everything they need... but when I come to try to recommend a distro to these potential new users, instead of having one or two just solid, uncontroversial options I can hand them and be the end of it, I end up with a long list of "maybe this one, unless..."

So... I'm no stranger to making mistakes in my homelab setup. At one point, I ran everything, including a virtualized router, off of ESXi on one system, and faced the consequences. Currently, I'm running TrueNAS Core on that same ESXi system, passing through the drives to the NAS instead of something smarter like passing through a raid card or something, and as a result, I'm getting a lot of phantom drive errors that provide no real details and seem to go away on reboot, temporarily. Not getting the full SMART data passed through on them, either.
Obviously, this is a bad situation, and I'm risking my array by doing this, so much like when I moved pfsense to its own dedicated box, I need to
So... Just got an email saying my status was changed (for an initial application), and My Social Security now shows that all steps were completed and a decision was made, and that I should receive a letter soon with detailed information. Cool.
Except... I'm in the middle of a big move (which I told them about). If they sent it to my old address, I have to rely on USPS mail forwarding which... I've been told isn't guaranteed to be reliable and can take a while to send it to your new address, and if they sent it to the new address... I, um... Won't actually be there for a few days yet.
So... Is there any way to check or know whether or not it was approved before the letter? My Social Securit
So... In Nebraska, though I can't find anything obvious in State law that changes this from federal, but I'm moving out of my apartment after more than five years in it. During my long time here, the carpets have sustained some damage, most notably, apartment maintenance cut into it while resolving some leaky pipe water damage (and repatched over it), and I have some pet damage where a smallish (~3in) hole was dug into a corner. I am not pretending that I am not responsible for this, and let the management know about it when I started the move-out process.
The management mentioned that they consider their carpets to have a useful life of (around) 10 years, and so would prorate based on my t
So... to preface, android through web works like a dream. It's fast, responsive, shows all the information I expect, casts to chromecast, plays the next episode, etc, without issue.
But... I'm coming from plex. And the main way I consumed content through plex was to use the android app to cast to one of my chromecast-connected TV's. So I figured I'd do the same, get the Jellyfin app listed on the google play store, and use it just like I used plex.
Unfortunately... it doesn't seem to be working well? In the android mobile app, absolutely none of my TV shows show their episodes. I can view individual episodes if I go into the "episodes" tab thing and scroll until I hit the show I want, bu
So... I'm not an optimizer farmer; I don't put all my time and effort into making the most money nor do I make decisions purely for profit... but I couldn't seem to find anyone putting out actual numbers on the animal's profitability to actually compare them, just... vague suggestions that Pigs were good, sheep were bad, nothing in the coop was worth any real money, etc.
But... I got bored. And decided to do some of the numbers myself, and figured I should put them here so they'd be somewhere for the next person to go looking for them, like I did.
These calculations, unless otherwise specified, are done with the Artisan profession, because barring some very specific situations (like the
I mean, at first blush, that idea probably doesn't surprise folks; after all, the twins are more or less mirror images of each other; same height, same build, exact same colors... same mole on the opposite cheeks. Like, the idea that they're more similar than the typical set of siblings isn't surprising.
But, of course, there's one big factor that I'm sure some of y'all'll be calling out here: they're not the same gender. And, as any gradeschool biology class will tell you, identical twins have identical DNA, which means they should get the same, er... "gender assignment” at birth.
The simpler solution, many will assume, would be that they're actually just fraternal twins, who share no
So... Volume 8 ended, yeah. And Penny's death was quite the shocker to many people, including me. I was hurt, and I was conflicted, but it was written well and it was performed well. Initially, I decided to wait and let my feelings sort themselves out, so I could be a bit more objective when I came to talk about it. I assumed that, once the pain went away, I'd like it more.
I was wrong.
As my feelings about the subject congealed, I kept finding more and more areas where the plotline failed, and my discomfort only grew. Now, I did not reverse my position on whether or not it was well-written--it was--but the world is more complicated than "thing good" or "thing bad". There is nuance here;
So... I've played the DLC, on multiple saves, tried out multiple character combinations, did direct links to all the characters regularly, etc. For the most part, it's pretty great. It's fun having Shizuka running around in a more... friendly sense, and two version of Lukas is... well, a lot of times unremarkable but still fun at times. And people are already talking about the great moments with Apollo, C'tron's story is compelling (and the main story of the DLC, so...), and Emilie remains my favorite; she's so great! Including in more serious moments.
'Course, one thing I was really disappointed in was, the new party members (Luke, Lukas, and Shizuka) essentially have no incidental dia
