Over the last few days I've been getting Emacs working on Microsoft Windows. I haven't done that for a few years and some things have changed.

I noticed something that puzzled me. I installed MSYS2 to get some of the utilities. When I did that an error occurred in M-x list-packages because of GNU GPG path problems. This is a known problem, see this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/ymzw78/windows_elpa_gnupg_and_keys_problems/ . The underlying cause is that MSYS2 installs a version of GNU gpg which requires MSYS2 style paths. Emacs sends it Windows paths which it can't understand. The solution is to install a port of GNU gpg for Windows.

Here is another thing that works, but

I'm thinking about buy a PineTime mostly so I experiment with smartwatch programming.

I'm confused by the documentation. There's a section called "Reprogramming the PineTime". It says that to reprogram the watch you have to take off the back cover and connect to pads on the watch using a programming adaptor. On the other hand, the section "Upgrade PineTime to InfiniTime 1.0.0" says that upgrading to InfiniTime 1.0.0 can be done over Bluetooth.

So, to upgrade the existing OS you only need Bluetooth, but to do any other programming you need to physically connect? Is that right?

Why isn't changing the software via Bluetooth available to everyone?

Every day I try to update Arch. When I went to do it yesterday it gave a net upgrade size of 105MB. That's much larger than anything I've seen before and seems suspicious.

Through a bit of digging (with pacman -S) I managed to find that the qt6-base is the culprit. Has anything important happened to that package recently?

I know there is csv-mode and I've used it, but it's not quite appropriate for my problem.

I want to write an elisp program that takes a CSV file as an input. I don't want to view the file in a buffer (as in csv-mode) or edit it. I just want to read it into a data structure as fast and efficiently as possible. Does anyone know the best package to do that?

I have heard of Ulf Jasper's csv.el but I can't find it anywhere.

I have used Xfce for many years. In that past when you inserted a drive - such as a USB flash drive - an icon would appear on the desktop.

This seems to have gone away, which is a shame because it was very useful. Now whenever I use a USB drive I have to find Thunar (which I rarely use).

How do I get this feature back?

I have investigated the settings menu. In "Settings->Desktop" there is a tab called "File/Launcher Icons". In that there is a menu where you can pick things to include. I have included "Devices->Fixed Disks and Drives" and "Devices->Removable Disks and Drives". In the past turning this on worked, but it seems it doesn't now.

I'm using Arch.

I'm trying to get the taxi app "Bolt" working. I have a phone running crDroid. According to the wiki that is supported by MicroG.

What exactly do I need to do to get maps working? It is maps that are the the problem, they don't appear in the Bolt app.

My phone is a Samsung A20e with the EurekaDevelopment build of crDroid 8.8 using Android 12. In self-check "System has signature spoofing support" is checked, but "System grants signature spoofing permission" and "System spooks signature" are unchecked.

I have been using Thunderbird for reading RSS feeds for a long time, at least 14 years. (The age of my folders may be a problem, though I'm using new Thunderbird.)

A few days ago it stopped working. The feeds stopped updating. It seems that Thunderbird has somehow lost the URLs.

I look a particular folder and everything looks fine. I can read all the past posts from that source. However, no new posts appear. I know that there have been new posts because I see them on the websites corresponding to the feed.

It seems that Thunderbird has "half lost" the URLs. So, I right-click on a feed and select "Subscribe..." the box "enter feed URL" is empty. There is no feed icon shown in the tree disp

I'm new to custom ROMs. I have a Samsung A20e which is a Exynos processor Samsung phone. It is the EU version so I believe I can change the OS.

I have heard of Magisk, TWRP, Odin and Heimdall. Though I'm not sure which ones of them I need. I have done the bootloader unlocking and OEM unlocking on my phone.

Since there are Odin and Heimdall does that mean that I don't need TWRP? The TWRP instructions for my phone are confusing and tell me to use Magisk first. Also, the Magisk instructions say that using a custom recovery is deprecated for Samsung devices. That being said, eve

In the thread "Emacs too slow", there are lots of people saying that Emacs is always slow on MS Windows. There are some people saying that Emacs is always slow in general regardless of the OS.

Now, Emacs is never going to be as fast as simpler editors. However, most of the time you shouldn't be able to notice any slowness. All this suggests to me that lots of people are doing things sub-optimally. I have used Emacs for more a very long time. Here I'll give some advice on speed. I haven't deliberately optimized my Emacs setup for speed, but I have avoided things that make it slow.

Firstly, there are some things that

We haven't had enough RIs recently. I was talking about Blair Fix elsewhere, so I thought I'd this one.

Here is the blog post in question. It was written back in 2020 and the links to the pictures seem to have broken over the past four years.

Generally, Blair Fix argues that everyone else is wrong about economics. Usually, the writing is unnecessarily long-winded. Here we have Fix arguing at length the everybody else is wrong on productivity. In this RI I'll only deal with his ideas on the concept of productivity, I'll set aside the productivity/pay gap which he also discusses.

I have a program that uses "exec", it can also use the importlib library. Either way, the same issue occurs.

I put the following into the file "import_test_lib.py".

bar = 48

def foo():
    print(bar)

foo()

If I run this then it prints "48", as expected.

Now let's say that I run it using "exec" from another file. I simply write exec(open("import_test_lib.py").read()). This also works and gives "48". The problem is that this situation doesn't match the actual use case I need. What I need is to run it from a function - and that doesn't work as expected.

I write the following into a file and run it:

def x(f):
    exec(open(f, "r").read())

x("impor

Lots of people use python interactively through M-x run-python and send code to it with things like C-c C-c and C-c C-r. That's fair enough, but it has it's problems. When an imported library changes the only sensible way to deal with it is to stop the python process and start another one. (That's because in Python the built in "import" statement doesn't reload the file. You could reload each library with reload, but that would be tricky.)

For that reason, I would like to use M-x compile. It's suitable for that kind of thing and I've used it for running programs written in other languages. (I think this is a fairly well known Emacs trick).

The problem is Venvs. My projects use venv

Lots of people are not obeying the rules!

In the past 10 days there has been lots of activity of this sub, many more replies than normal. The vast majority of these replies have been bad. We mods have deleted an enormous amount of replies, more than 600 in the past week.

Let's be clear

  • We are serious about rule II.

Someone asks a question and you have an opinion about it, but you don't have any economic theory or evidence to back it up. We will delete that.

If it is an idea that sounds good to you or feels right, then we will probably delete it.

Someone asks a question and you have an anecdote about it, or a story someone told you. We will delete that.

It seems that when I start applications Xfce is trying to resize the windows in some way. Is it possible to prevent this behaviour?

The main problem I have is with GNU Emacs. I have it configured to make it's initial window a certain size. Xfce seems to over-ride this somehow.

If it isn't possible to stop this, is it at least possible to set initial window dimensions in a configuration file somewhere.
