How would you handle request for promotion when you are a keyman but don't actually want to leave?

If they don't bump you upon recognition, are you just stuck in the "leave team you like working for" situation if you want to make market rate?

I feel like I've perpetually ended up in a fairly key role (think tech admin + board reporting intersect) - and maybe I just overvalue myself, but I've always gotten a bigger raise than my company could counter with.

I saw another post about budget mistakes and thought I'd post about this problem I've run into myself in Q1 to see if there's any creative solutions I haven't thought of yet.

For context, I work in a PE company, roughly 1-5B revenue. As is usual, spending is higher than budgeted, while revenue is a bit low because budgets are a stretch goal. We need to find 2-3% in "savings" unless revenue rises more than it will, but it's just small amounts from most groups.

The unique issue is that one specific group is +20% over budget.

The reason? HR had their salary cost with the wrong exchange rate - actual costs were coming in correctly, and prior budget was correct, so while there was a forecast
