Prologue: I want to make this clear from the start - this is not intended to be an informational post. It’s all anecdotal. While I originally wanted to make it informational, I realized within about 5 seconds of searching that not only am I not qualified to interpret scientific articles about depression and mental health, but also, I don’t *want* to do that for this post. I wanted to write what I would’ve liked to read, and that’s story of a normal person. Not a super scientific breakdown of what’s going on in my brain to make me feel the way I feel. Not a story of a professional athlete, which is valuable, but not necessarily relatable. Not a well-crafted human interest piece being pa

I did this race last year (my first - and only - hundred) and loved it. I didn’t perform as well as I wanted to (wanted a sub-24 finish, scooted in just under the 30hr cutoff… see my post history if you have like 3 hours free and feel like reading a novel of a race report), so I was out for redemptio

I’ve been working with a coach for ultras and distance stuff; training is focused on quality over quantity, lots of workouts, with time-based instead of distance-based runs. Coming off my first 100 miler and then a solid 50k in the spring, I wanted to go for a PR and another sub-4 attem

Race: Uwharrie Mountain Run, 20 miler

Date: February 4, 2017

Now this is a story all about how,

My race got flipped & turned upside down.

And I’d like to take a minute,

Just sit right there,

While you read this report that I’d like to share.

In North Carolina, running like cray.

In a forest is how I spent my Saturday.

Friday’s events, though, weren’t very cool,

We got lots of emails from our local schools.

Some water main issues - the supply wasn’t good!

They told us “don’t use the water in the neighborhood.”

*I didn’t expect that and I got so

Race: Frosty 50k

Date: January 21

Prep and Pre-Race This was originally scheduled for the first weekend in January and I planned to use it as a fun long run to get birthday mileage (plus an extra 4 for good luck). However, it got snowed out and rescheduled for this week. After talking to my coach about upcoming race plans, we decided that I’d take this one at race effort, then take the 20 mile trail race I have in two weeks at a comfortable pace, and then next up is the 100 miler on 4/1. So, that left me trying to figure out my goal. Based on how Philly (4:18) and my last ultra (40mi in 7:50, feeling solid) were, I thought that my…

Holy cow. First off, I want to thank all of the amazing Redditors who have been posting words of encouragement and support for myself and the group of us doing BMM - it means so much and is greatly appreciated.

TL;DR: Everyone is awesome. Sorry this is a doozy of a long report... I just tried to make some edits and cut out stuff that I wrote more for myself to remember. Whomp.

Race was Black Mountain Monster 24 hour ultramarathon. The race also had 12 and 6 hour time options. This race has been about 8 or 9 months in the making, with 14 of us running (2 for the 6hr, 4 for the 12hr, 8 for the 24hr) and 2 awesome crew members.

Pseudo-TL;DR didn’t cry after this race, so I’ve got that going for me.

Training and Background

This was my first time doing this race. It used to be a lottery entry, and a friend and I both entered for the 20M last year (there was also a 40M and 8M option). She got in, I didn’t, so I figured I’d go and volunteer at packet pick-up since I was gonna crew her and end up waking up early anyways, and then (with another friend & her dog) we’d go meet her along the course. Because of volunteering, I got a guaranteed entry for this year (which they turned into a first-come, first-serve registration instead of lottery, but it still hit the cap
