Hi ThinkPaddys,

would it generally be possible to swap the rather good WQHD screen of my X1C3 into my T480s that has a fantastic keyboard but a rather meh and dull screen? (It's OK only at 100% brightness...)

If so, has anyone here done that?

Hi,

I tried to set up three laptops of mine to be synched using Syncthing.

They all run linux (two Solus Budgie, one Linux Mint Cinnamon).

I wanted the contents of their respective /home/[username] folders to be synched, those folders all have exactly the same 'name'. One /home folder though was empty as I had just set the laptop up as a backup machine.

My mistake was that I allowed all three machines to be synched with each other. And it nearly cost me having to reinstall my main laptop as it was 'overwritten' by the empty laptop which, of course, was rather stupid of me.

My question: Which option in the settings do I have to tick or untick to tell the machines in my little Syncthing n

Whatever you call that screen that pops up when you boot up your ThinkPad showing the red/white Lenovo logo:

On my X395 the resolution of that screen is far too low resulting in the logo covering almost the complete display of the laptop.

I have another X395 (both running Linux btw) that splash screen of which doesn't show that effect. The logo there is approx. 12 x 5 cm in size and not blurred.

How can I change that stupid splash screen's resolution?

Hi,

I have one X270 with a non-backlit keyboard and one with a backlit keyboard. The backlit one I'm thinking of installing into the X270 the keyboard of which came without backlight.

Is that possible at all independently of which motherboard is installed?

Or does it depend on a certain type of motherboard because the backlit keyboard needs certain sockets and whatnots?

I'm planning to install Fedora Budgie 38 on a laptop of mine. Then I'll need to transfer folders and files from another computer the OS of which uses the ext4 file format.

How do I go about that? Do I first convert the old files to btrfs or can I do that on the new computer with Fedora using the btrfs format?

Basically the title:

I'm looking for a ThinkPad (used or refurbished) that comes with an RJ45 port and USB-C alternate mode. I won't need it for myself but a friend of mine will start studying IT soon and his school gave them information on what their laptops for study will require - 14" or bigger FHD or higher res screen, RJ45/1GB port, USB-C AM.

Any tips?

I have no idea how to recognise "alternate mode" and I've never read about that so I couldn't help but I would like to.

Hey everyone,

new to this sub (but not a laptop or computer noob) I'm looking for a place to download this laptop's service manual or whatever it's called.

Lenovo for example publishes so-called HMMs, Hardware Maintenance Manuals, that show and explain in detail how to dismantle, repair, replace parts and reassemble their laptops. I'm sure Acer has similar manuals.

Would you point me to where I could find those and what they're called?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Recently I got a used T495 in great condition, removed the Windows SSD, installed a larger SSD and installed Linux. First Linux Mint, then Solus, and Linux Mint again. On the side: I've done that sort of thing lots of times, know about unpowering the battery before opening the laptop, know about one-sided SSDs only and such.

On all installations the laptop randomly freezes when I need to shut it down, be it via the hardware ON/OFF button or via the software: I can move the mouse pointer (using the trackpad or the trackpoint) but cannot trigger shutdowns or similar stuff. If I then do a cold shutdown by keeping the ON/OFF button pressed until the machine powers off I can work normally again.

Hi there!

I got a Barnes & Mullins tenor banjo that I want to restring and tune in Irish tuning, ie. GDAE. (It has CGDA at present.)

What pitch do the strings have to have? Would the A be A4? Or an octave lower?

I'm a violinist and fiddle player and am rather confused as to the pitch the strings of the banjo have to have: The violin's A string would have 440 or, let's say, 441 Hz, the other strings accordingly below or above that pitch.

Yet, all the strings that have been recommended to me seem to be too tight if I tune them like a violin. Do I have to tune them at a lower pitch?

Would you be able to recommend strings and their respective gauge for short neck tenor banjos that go up

If I think I found an original Silver Bell tenor (not sure which model exactly, 19 frets) in good condition, with great, loud sound, straight neck, from around the 1920s/30s - what could a seller ask for?

I'm talking about a find in Germany, they want 1600€ (1680US$) for it, hard shell case included.

Worth it?

Hi there!

I own a wonderful ThinkPad X395 (AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 3700U CPU / AMD Picasso GPU) that came with a Fibocom L850-GL LTE wwan card.

I'm running Linux on that machine (SOLUS, so not Ubuntu or anything as popular), so the LTE modem doesn't work. A rather stupid "feature" by Fibocom, these modems only work out of the box running Windows.

As I'm not intending to go through compiling a driver that was created for Ubuntu systems and see if that works I'm now looking to get another modem that might work. I know there are modems like that for Linux machines but I need help:

Can you suggest a LTE modem to me that will most likely work running Linux (Sierra Wireless or the like) on my

I've recently acquired a wonderful ThinkPad X395 which has only one internal battery.

Is there a powerful enough rechargeable battery to have some extra charging power for the X395 when travelling?
