Lose one, gain another

tragedy (not tragedeigh)

Just had a situation where we had to offboard an employee named Saline, and then had to onboard the new replacement employee, named Bandana.

Even weirder, both of them had last names that were common first names that aren't often thought of as last names (so not stuff like Jordan, Daniel, Kelly, that are common last names).

When that it happens it always looks like the name is "backwards" and just missing the comma, so I kept having to correct my brain that it wasn't (using examples for the last name here, not the real ones) Monica Saline and now I'm having to do the same to remind myself it's not Kevin Bandana.

Difference in how Alyssa Liu approached her jumps

❄ Milano-Cortina 2026 (General Discussion) ❄

I've got a question here that I hope somebody with a lot more knowledge of skating than I have can answer. Watching the women's free skate a couple of nights ago, I noticed that Liu "telegraphed" her jumps beforehand in a way that nobody else did.

Probably not even a figure-skating term, it's common in sports with a defense where you don't want to indicate what you're about to do in a way that tips them off early - of course in those sports it's a problem whereas here without a defense it isn't. But with everyone else, I often had no idea when they were going to pull out a jump while skating from one place to another doing fillers and transitions. With Liu, it was generally obvious beforeha

E.g. Bob is a crude, selfish jackass. He's rude to everyone, argues all the time. Ticks off his friends, his colleagues barely tolerate him, every stranger he has a conversation with regrets it afterward.

But then you meet him and his wife and you expect that they are going to be spiteful and bickering - but they have a really great, fun, loving relationship. Or you see him as a dad and his kids think the world of him and he actually turns out to be an amazing father.

Is this just a type of Hidden Depths or is there something else it fits into? It's not Aww Look They Really Do Love Each Other because the subverted expectation isn't set by the spouses fighting with each other, but just by o

E.g. Amazon SES or Send Grid.

If [email protected] sends from one of these services to [email protected], then it's probably fine.

If [email protected] uses a service like this to send to his collegues, all with [email protected] emails, then they get marked as spoofing and get quarantined.

Proofpoint support doesn't seem to have a solid solution, their recommendations are things that would auto-allow any email from that service through, or are ones that involve setting up an inbound filter that doesn't have enough options to accomplish this. e.g. they suggest setting a filter that includes "sender IS" but the sender is different every time, it ends up being manycharactersofgibberish-my

So for a while I've run a 4-round event of Victory in the Pacific at MCon. Doing that again this year and adding some other 70s AH classics to the mix - War at Sea, Origins of WW2, and Naval War.

Con runs Thursday afternoon to Sunday afternoon in Temple, which is about 1/3rd of the way from Austin to Dallas, and admission is just $30 for the whole thing. https://tabletop.events/conventions/millenniumcon-2025

About half the con is miniatures, most of which are pretty newbie-friendly and you don't have to bring your own ships, armies, etc. There's also a fair assortment of other tabletop games, mostly war-related but not all: Railroad Tycoon, Axis & Allies, Terraforming Mars, Mare Nostrum,

Every year in Austin a few friends host a "War of the Ring day" where they open up a large home all Saturday with room for a dozen or so game tables, get 15-20 folks together from all over Texas (mostly Austin area but we usually have some people make the 3 to 4 hour trips from Dallas and Houston, often staying over for some bonus gaming on Sunday) cook everyone BBQ, and play the game a bunch. I got in 3 games and went 3-0 for the first time at the event!

GAME 1 - As the FP 4 of my first few cards synchronized nicely - Gwaihir the Windlord to separate companions and move extra distance, Fear Fire Foes which activates the North if a companion made it to Bree, Book of Mazarbul which activates

After I closed and reopend the program for an unrelated reason, suddenly my Today view has a blank line after every single entry, making it far more annoying to scan as well as causing it run out of room to display everything at times. I'm looking through all the setup, view, display, etc, options and I don't see a way to put it back the right way.

You know, that time where some scene, joke, or gag is funny, but then they keep going to try and add more to it, which actually makes it less funny?

For me, it's in S4 Benefits when Lily tells Barney he needs to talk to a therapist. He says to Lily something like "If I'm going to pay a woman $200 an hour to help me solve my problems, we're not going to spend the hour talking. . . . and we're BOTH going to be on that couch. . . . You see, the woman in this scenario is a prostitute."

That got a big laugh out of me because it sounds like the main joke of that exchange is Barney's therapist/prosititute comparison, but then you don't expect him to explain the joke as if it wasn't already ob

I don't mean stuff that the show made real, like how they actually did create a lot of the websites that are mentioned on the show.

For me it was the Canadian currency. Barney likes to make fun of Canada and sometimes he claims that some facet of Canada is stereotypical and just involves moose, Zambonis, Mounties, fur trapping, or whatever else.

So I thought he was doing the same thing in Duel Citizenship when he says something like "Your coins have beavers, and your 5 dollar bill has kids playing hockey, it's like you're trying to get us to mock you!" But nope, that's actually true.

So in my 4th round Boardgame Players Association tournament game, I was the Soviets in a pretty good position. On Turn 6, my hand included Five Year Plan, Voice of America, and Duck and Cover. My first thought was to send one of Voice/Duck to outer space and hold the other one until next turn. Then I realized that this wouldn't work because Five Year Plan could draw them out. So I figured I needed to just play Duck and Cover in my first action round and let it drop DEFCON from 3 to 2, and then I would space-race Voice while holding 5YP rather than vise-versa, because holding 5YP could be used in my favor to discard a bad scoring card later.

I really needed to get into Central America (Fide
