I love this sub, but I've noticed a pattern: a lot of energy here goes into arguing about what Solarpunk *is*, the aesthetic, the tone, whether it's utopian enough, whether a piece of concept art counts. And look, that's a fun conversation. But it's worth noticing that we're debating the rules of a genre that barely has a body of work yet. A few anthologies, some Pinterest boards, some very green skyscraper renders. That's it. We're arguing over canon for a canon that doesn't exist.

*Punk didn't start with a style guide.* It started with people picking up instruments they barely knew how to play and making something anyway. The aesthetic came *after* the doing. I think Solarpunk works

I initially came to this sub by accident. I had the idea to see if I could build a DIY laptop around a Raspberry Pi 5 and some spare parts and stuck it in a cigar box. Then I found a community of folks doing similar things, I found this sub.

I didn’t come to this sub asking for help. I didn’t come hear wanting someone to teach me to build this buzzword thing called a cyberdeck. I’m a programmer by trade, a tinkerer as a hobby, middle-aged, and autistic. And I use duct tape, cut corners, call it “good enough” and don’t seek perfection.

I think it’s really cool that people are excited to learn new skills! But it kind of feels like a group of people ought to build a sort of education on-ramp
