As many of you, my dear readers, will know, the 8" per miles-squared formula describes a parabola rather than a circle. The question is: does it approximate a circle well enough that we don't care? There is an argument that, over any distance that anyone except the 443km photo guy Marc Bret is looking at, it's absolutely fine and dandy. I'm about to start talking about backyard science being done with garage lint, so the disparity is going to be thoroughly lost in the weeds of anything I'll be discussing.

That is to say, I think the argument that it's a fine and dandy approximation is itself fine and dandy. Possibly it wears a cravat and needlessly walks with a cane sporting an elaborately

I think it might be handy if people could have a guide.

There's a gold standard of pretending to be an idiot for comedic purposes and to me that is Diane Morgan while she's playing Philomena Cunk. The qualitive difference between her and our resident trolls is that she informs the subject beforehand. They don't know what Cunk is going to say, but they know that Cunk is a character; there's no deceit like there was in the Chris Morris/Ali G era(not that I am anything but a Brass Eye fanboy).

Now, if people want to engage with the likes of Nigglas24, iwinloser, Separate-Cable-8800 and so on as if they were a Cunk interviewee ie being informed, then great. I think it would be a bit tidier if

If someone's shit their pants, gets called out for stinking the place out and being gross, it is of no benefit to them to say "Aha! I actually have full adult continence! I only shit myself to make you look stupid for believing that I shit myself by mistake. I! Win! You! Lose!"

You've still shit yourself. In the absence of any evidence but your faecally upholstered trousers, you have no gain to make from making light of our conclusion that you've shit yourself because you couldn't help it.

Now that I read that back to myself, it's a very strained metaphor, but I'm posting it anyway.

This is of course inspired by the couple of recent threads around the Flat Earth Society's jape of saying the earth is accelerating upwards at 9.81 m/s/s and that's why things accelerate down.

As many of you will know, the shower thought that sent Einstein on the road to General Relativity was to imagine a man waking up in a sealed box, isolated from the outside universe. He weighs the same as he did before but he would have no way of knowing if he just in a box on earth, or was in space being accelerated at 1g.

Have any flat earthers basically flipped that and said the earth is stationary (as per The Wooly Bibble) gravity is a thing but it points the same way all over the earth? None of

I am not a boor(this is not true) so I did of course search before asking and found this, but it's not quite what I'm begging for. https://www.reddit.com/r/Surveying/comments/1ds1wlh/with_all_modern_surveying_equipment_at_your/

What I'm after is your suggestions for homebrew observations that a person could make with instruments bodged out of garage junk. These would need to discriminate between the pear and the pizza.

I could then ask the flat earthers I dally with to go and do that, and then bask in the radio silence that ensues when they don't. Kinda like reverse photosynthesis.

I have been lazy of late and not updated the following list. It's of things flerfs have said to me, personally, which I've found especially amusing.

In the interests of fairness, though, us regulars and veterans here must have come across some terrible arguments for the globe too, so I invite you to share them here too. Might as well make it a chaotic mashup of both.

  1. South is down. so Australians need to be glued to the ceiling. It's so commonplace that it's easy to forget how infantile it is, that is if you're one of us weirdoes that's been here for so long there's brain-callouses in your skull for the really stupid things flerfs say.

  2. Pictures that very clearly show an object

I'll get around to taking a picture of it soon, but in the interim I gently implore you to boot up the ole Google Earth, zoom into Carnoustie on the east coast of Scotland, guddle about until you see the bit that's obviously a train station, then draw a line with the Ruler function such that it clips the nose on the Fife doggie. If you have done as I gently implored, you will have already noticed that there's a landmass south of it that looks a lot like the profile of an adorable terrier doggie. That's Fife. It's still allowed to call itself a kingdom, but I have no idea why. Don't hurt the doggie; just set the Ruler slightly in front of its wee cute wet nosey nose.

So, take the Ruler from

Regulars of here will be aware I am not a flat earther, nor even remotely close to it.

If you are new, then you shall just have to decide for yourself based on the following explanatory text. Spoiler: I'm not, I just don't like bad arguments when we have really good ones.

Mapping the land and charting the seas is a huge undertaking. You need to get a metaphorical army and literal navy of surveyors and navigators together to even start, and it still takes about a century before it's any good.

It would be a good bit quicker today with fancy toys like digital theodolites and laser rangefinders, but it's still a lot. Can't use GPS, of course. It's gubmint.

You would be reasonable in poin
