So, I have received my X2100 from u/xueyao. Instead of just sharing a cute photo of it compiling GHC, I'd like to share my experience and notes on getting Linux to work on it.

Hardware

First impressions after getting the laptop from its cardboard box were disappointing. The chassis was in worse condition than I anticipated. There's a noticeable bend in the body (meaning the laptop doesn't sit straight on the table). I hope this will be mostly mitigated when I install the battery (which haven't arrived yet). Another issue is that the left shift key was mushy and sticky. After removing the keycap, I've found that the silicon plunger was detached from the pad. I recentered it on the pad an

I've been interested in Rust for about two years now, and I have read the rust book and written some "hello worlds" with it to get a feel for the language. Recently I've had a thought: my desktop running Sway was missing a nice feature of full-blown desktop environments: on-screen display notifications for volume, brightness and battery. So, after a quick hoogle to make sure there isn't a Haskell binding for pulseaudio, I've decided that the time has finally come to use Rust for something useful. Here is the result:

I am interested in purchasing a X210 with 10th gen intel chipset from here, and I was trying to contact them to no avail. I wrote an email to [email protected] on 2019-11-21, got no response so far. I tried both from my gmail address and from a personal server. Also, if there are any owners of said device, can you please answer a couple of questions?

  • Does it run Linux?
  • How are the thermals? What's the sustained performance under load?
  • Does it charge via the newly added Type-C port?

I've got a T420 just for fun, so this is not something I really need to fix, more of an interest.

Basically, quality sound through speakers is normal (as good as it gets for a thinkpad), but when I plug in my 3.5mm jack and use headphones, the sound quality is really bad. It's as if the sound is first sent via Skype on dial-up and then played back to me. Frequencies are cut off, there is some weird echo-like effect (though admittedly it's not quite echo, I don't quite know how to explain it properly). The lower-frequency sounds go through better than high-freq ones. If I plug in the headphones half-way (so that only one of the channels connects) the sound through this one channel is great

It's as if someone recorded the sound in a big echo-y room with a shitty $10 microphone and then this is what's playing back to me. If I plug in the headphones half-way (so that only one of the channels connects) the sound through this one channel is great, but it's only one channel.

I'm using GNU/Linux and Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones. Both the headphones and the cable have been tested before, they work with all the other
