I am trying to find a low cost way of directly connect an LVDS LCD to a Cubieboard's GPIO that supports LVDS rather than using a baseboard. From what I understand, I will need to do some cable hacking on a generic lvds cable to make it adaptable to the cubieboard. I will also need a way of powering the lcd board and backlight.

Details about this can be found here: http://linux-sunxi.org/Cubieboard/LVDS

My question is:

  1. Is hacking the cable the correct solution for connecting the LCD via LVDS and if so (as a total beginner) where could i look to learn about this process?

  2. What do I need to power the LCD and how would I accomplish this?

thanks in advance!

Is the BBB capable of being a simple ubuntu or debian 'desktop' computer with a GUI? i.e running Office / Web apps, other lightweight programs?

I see that there is progress being made on video acceleration but I have turned up little in the way of a BBB ubuntu/debian desktop computer in my searches.

Anyone had any luck running either distro with a desktop/gui? likely to happen anytime soon?

Cheers guys

Hey r/techsupport collaborators, I am trying to get a network setup for a non profit art school. I am pretty tech savy and am looking for your ideas more then instructions.

What they are after is an archival system for digital artwork thats accessable across the network. Ideally something that will provide good file management and be easy enough for anyone on the network to use. They would also like to be able to back it all up. Also, we are talking windows OS.

I was thinking a Network storage attachment device with 2 hhd's (one for mirroring/backup) but thats as far as my thinking has got me. Would love you input guys. Cheers!

edit: Would also like to have a database going for the art!

Shortly I will be undertaking a long term volunteer assignment in East Timor. I have always loved photography but with all the saving/spending I need to do before I leave, the dslr I was hoping for is abit out of my wallets reach.

Having known this, my lovely girlfriend has bought me an old film slr. Having spoken to some of other volunteers over there, I am told there is film available (although its mostly out of date). I am waiting by mail box for some photography books and I have been doing some research/playing around with the camera and have found that lenses is where it's at. The camera is a Canon EOS 500N (or Rebel G for the Americans in the audience) and has a 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 le
