Been seeing (and participating in) a lot of disagreement on what Suckless is really about. Felt like we should talk about it so we're on the same page :)

Personally, I've understood the third option to be most core to Suckless software. dwm isn't just minimal for the sake of minimalism; you're encouraged to actively interact with the source code, starting with `config.h.`

Take the farbfeld image format for example. It's definitely not resource-efficient. There's 0 compression, it's basically a stripped-down BMP. But it's made to be dead simple to parse.

And now for my most controversial take: C is only used in Suckless software because it is the most well-known among the most flexible l

This is just a "shower thought" post. I imagine a codec that processes video and audio simultaneously, using information about one to make inferences about the other. I wonder if this has been explored, and/or if there would be much to be gained.

E.g. Given a video of a gun being shot at a window, the audio could be coded in a way that makes gunshots and glass shattering noises occupy relatively less space.

E.g. A video of a person speaking could be made smaller by inferring the person's mouth shape as a function of the sound of their speech, plus some perturbation.

I have no idea if this would result in much better compression or not. The thought just randomly occurred to me, and I felt

I'm in the brainstorming phase of a custom keyboard. I type quite a few special unicode symbols, and I'd like to be able to type these similar to how Vim does digraphs:

  • Do a command to activate digraph mode
  • Type 2 keys that describe your symbol
    • E.g.: (- enters a ∈, -> is →, In is ∫, etc.

I'm thinking of making it so if I press the layer-raise and layer-lower buttons simultaneously on my board, it'll start listening for a digraph.

I'm super new to this scene, and I'm wondering if anyone has done anything similar to this. I was thinking of using the QMK firmware, but I have no idea if it'd support this sort of thing. I also would need to ensure my MCU has enough storag

Arch was my first Linux distro. I had a couple years where I constantly screwed things up, blamed Arch for being stupid / hard, and got angry at the community for not holding my hand.

I still have a lot more to go. For instance: someone with a good understanding of everything would know not to downgrade glibc. That would be silly, of course, everybody knows you shouldn't do that unless you really know what you're doing.

Well I was trying to play Stardew Valley and couldn't get multiplayer to work. A forum post said the bug was caused by the new glibc. So naturally, I have the downgrade program on my computer, and I did what one does.

Instantly, every running process started disintegra
