I have a sloped lot with a long deck across the back of the house. It is attached one side to a ledger and the far side supported by a beam supported by 6 10' tall 4x6s sitting on concrete footings. All for about 30 years.

Two of the 4x6s are showing some rot on the bottom. I'm thinking I can replace about 6" of wood by splicing it with 2x4s on either side and bolts through.

This is all complicated by the fact that there is a workshop built under the deck that also uses these supports for its structure making shoring up from the ground difficult.

The plan was:

  • Cut 6" off the bottom to remove the rotted wood and replace with new wood from a new in-ground pressure treated 2x6. This is th

tl;dr: Can I replace 6" of 4x6 very load bearing rotted post at the bottom and sandwich it between bolted 2x6s as shown in picture - cutting at the penciled line?

I have a deck about 20' wide. My property is sloped so it is attached to the house on one side and there are 6 10' 4x6 supports holding up the outer beam. It's an old deck and the posts are sitting on concrete footers.

There is a few inches of rot now on the bottom of 2 of the supports. My plan to fix it is as follows:

  • Plan to cut 6" off the bottom to remove the rotted wood and replace with a new 6' length of wood from a new in-ground pressure treated 2x6.
  • Before cutting attach 2 2x4s on either side of the supports to t

I have a 30 year old deck on the back of my house about 12' up on an unlevel lot. The front of the deck is supported by 6 4x6s.

The 4x6s sit on concrete pads and are secured with brackets.

4 of 6 are solid to the bottom - pass the phillips head screwdriver test anyway. Not soft.

2 are starting to rot at the bottom (see pics). Here is my rough plan.

  • Pull the brackets away from the wood and remove the nails
  • Temporarily screw in a 10" or so 2x6 or 2x4 o

I see there's a "ID" mega thread but I'm not really trying task what a table is made of. More how to acquire the skill that the people answering have.

As stated. I have a bunch of boards I "inherited". I don't really know how you can get to the point where you can discern what they are. Is there a guide book? Something that explains appearance, grain and feel? All tribal lore?

Have been looking for something so I can use my Yakima Skybox. There don't seem to be a lot of great options even searching here.

Thule for around $800.

A $100 Amazon set that I tried and returned because they were a PITA to put on and off so I'd want to leave them on, when unloaded they made a horrific noise with harmonic resonance around 45MPH and they had a rubber strip on top that would easily be pushed out of its rail when sliding stuff on.

Anyone know of a $2-$300 option that is sturdy enough not to vibrate, easy to put on and off and easily attaches to the rails?

Been thinking, I wonder if there are any mid-range places that are good for getting a steak?

My experience is you can go to a chain like Longhorn, Saltgrass or similar for well under $100/couple. The steaks are fine and the atmosphere is always wagon wheels and horns...a little kitschy and loud.

Or you jump all the way up to Perry's, Fleming's, Eddy Vee's, Trulucks. You're easily going to be over $200/couple for a reasonably complete meal with a good steak.

Anything in between?

Mid 50s now. ChubbyFired 15 years ago.

Financially fine, current net worth at the high end of Chubby, higher than it was when I moonwalked out of corporate America adjusted for inflation.

Since then I've consulted never more than part time usually less, dabbled in Entrepreneuring with some promising but ultimately unsuccessful endeavors. Raised 2 kids who are now in High School, readying for college (which is paid for in separate accounts).

Here are some assorted considerations.

  • I will never fully retire if it is up to me. Completely new career is an option but I am averse to serious full-time commitment. I have grown accustomed to controlling my own time.

For retirement planning, we have great tools and piles of data for equity returns and even bond returns over 10, 30 and even 100+-year periods, adjusted for inflation.

What about Real Estate. Say you own a SFH as an investment. Is there historical data or better yet calculators where you can pick a timeframe on how such investments have performed over long periods of time and vs. inflation in the US? Specifically Appreciation?

Any suggestions on where to host? Here are my specific circumstances.

I am a wordpress novice and not trained in mysql or rdbms.

I am pretty comfortable with html/css/php and my current solution stores data in json files.

I will use wordpress for the marketing site. While I can and did make my own site, my designer skills are limited so access to themes is a big plus. Built in responsive design and seo and other features also appeal.

Doesn't have to be free but $10-$15/month to start would be about right.

I'd like to easily be able to scale the performance of the site if traffic grows (by paying more).

I think this is Austin food enough.

We want to go somewhere with a nice pool, grab a recliner or a table with an umbrella and be able to order food and drinks for at least a few hours.

This says hotel to me, but I have no desire to spend the night. I want it to be nice, good service, don't really care if it is a current chic spot full of beautiful people - in fact nah.

Ideas?
