Our library is currently closed to the public but we're planning to reopen soon. I have been researching self-checkout options but there seems to be a vast, overwhelming spectrum from ultra-fancy machines to basic software you use on a library computer. It also seems to take forever to hear back from reps about pricing and specs.

We are a mid-size public library and part of a larger consortium. We use barcodes so RFID options are not doable. We would prefer something either free-standing or table top. Any suggestions concerning brands, types, or general advice about the pros and cons. Thank you!

What is your library's procedure concerning library materials (books and media)?

There have been conflicting reports recently about whether cleaning, extended quarantine, or a combination of both is the appropriate action to reduce virus transmission on physical materials. The length of time the virus can potentially live on surfaces seems to change weekly from REALM, ALA, and the CDC.

Our library has been placing items in quarantine for 24 hours and cleaning all bookcovers/DVD cases/board books with a sanitizing solution.

Other libraries in our area are not cleaning but using extended quarantine (from 3-6 days) instead.

Thoughts, concerns, and what is your procedure?
