About a month ago, we asked for volunteers to help u/misatofan and I moderate this sub.

Today we are pleased to announce two new mods:

As a reminder, if you have any questions or concerns, please use the Message the Mods reddit feature rather than messaging any individual moderator.

Thanks for your patience during this process as it took longer than expected.

Where things stand

lawlmartz is no longer a moderator of r/Athens.

The August "no politics" ban is rescinded and is not taking effect. The ban never went through any shared process among the mod team, and it should not have been announced in a locked post with comments turned off. Removing posts and banning people for criticizing it was wrong. If you were banned in connection with any of that, send modmail and we will review it.

I'd like to get a few different points of view as to what's been happening in this sub over the past few days, r/OutOfTheLoop style. I would like a calm, rational discussion, please. Since I prefer using open communication vs private DMs/Chats, please reply here in this thread.

I'm not basing any decision based solely on who shows up here or how many people agree. This is just to help me understand the timeline and figure out what to look into further.

Thanks.

I've had a few side project ideas over the years but have never implemented one because I lack knowledge in (but willing to learn):

  • implementing social logins (OAuth), account management, etc.
  • managing backend permissions (RBAC always looks more complicated than it should be). My projects might have three tiers: free, hobbyist, pro
  • handling payments securely while actually monitoring for abuse/intrusion

Which social logins are allowed to tie into your project?

What are you using for authn/authz? My projects would be very low traffic, so I wouldn't want to commit to a big monthly spend. Are you rolling your own or using Auth0/Clerk/Supabase for auth and Stripe for payments? I'm com

I've created a few processes around preventing Claude from modifying files that I don't want it to and from it "accidentally" deleting files.

To prevent file modification, I use a zsh script for file protection on these files:

  • .zshrc
  • .zprofile
  • .gitconfig*
  • .claude/settings.json
  • .claude/CLAUDE.md
  • .ssh/config
  • .ssh/id_ed25519.pdf
  • let me know what other files might be good to lock down

flock script

intro:

flock: Toggle file protection on macOS.

Locks files and directories by stashing the original permissions in an
xattr (com.flock.mode), stripping write bits, changing ownership to

https://datetimemate.com/

Here's what you can do with it:

Date Difference (diff): Calculate the exact time gap between two dates/times. It supports nanosecond precision and accepts a wide variety inputs like now, yesterday, or raw epoch timestamps.

Date + Duration (dur): Add or subtract a specific range of time from a starting date (example: adding 3 weeks and 4 days to a timestamp) to easily figure out recurring schedules or deadlines.

Duration Math (durmath): Add or subtract two independent durations together (example: adding 3 days, 5 hours, 14 minutes to 2 days, 23 hours, 51 minutes). I think this is a fairly unique feature.

Duration Conversion (conv): Convert a duration

Hey everyone! I'm a sysadmin/developer who got tired of juggling between date, Wolfram Alpha, and timeanddate.com every time I needed to answer stuff like "how long between these two timestamps?" or "what date is 3 weeks and 4 days from now?" None of the existing tools did everything I wanted, so I built one.

It started as a Go library and CLI tool, but I figured why not throw a web UI on it too. It's got an old-school green-on-black terminal look. 😎

Here's what you can do with it:

  • Date diff -- How long between two dates/times? Works down to nanosecond precision, and you can use stuff like now, yesterday, tomorrow as inputs (UTC-based)
  • Date math -- Add or subtract du

I wrote a small set of shell functions that wrap bc for quick arithmetic. They accept multiple operands (add 1 2 3 4 -> 10) and store the result in $__ for chaining between calls. I include the following in my .zshrc file:

# Batch arithmetic: accepts multiple operands; add 1 2 3 -> 6; result stored in $__

function add() { __=$(echo ${@:#[-+*/]} | tr ' ' '+' | bc); echo $__ }
function sub() { __=$(echo ${@:#[-+*/]} | tr ' ' '-' | bc); echo $__ }
function mul() { __=$(echo ${@:#[-+*/]} | tr ' ' '*' | bc); echo $__ }
function div() { __=$(echo "scale=6; $(echo ${@:#[-+*/]} | tr ' ' '/')" | bc); echo $__ }
alias mul='noglob mul'

mac-screen-search captures your screen (or takes a glob of existing image files), OCRs the text, and draws colored boxes around every match. Use the -r flag to have it fill those boxes solid for redaction.

It also handles batch processing (overwrites in-place, preserves mtime), enhanced OCR for degraded images (Zoom calls, transparent terminals) with -e flag, and Levenshtein fuzzy matching to catch OCR misreads with the -d N flag.

Free, open source, written in Swift. Single file, no deps beyond macOS itself.

nics is a cross-platform command line tool to display information about Network Interface Cards (NICs). This program's output is easier to read compared to ipconfig, ip, or ifconfig. The same output is presented across platforms.

The lastest version displays color-coded IP addresses, making them stand out and easier to see. 😃

  • Binaries for Linux, macOS and Windows are provided in the releases section.
  • macOS and Linux: brew tap jftuga/homebrew-tap; brew update; brew install jftuga/tap/nics
