TLDR: Don’t sweat the 1RM. Start light and ease into things. You’ll lift heavy soon enough. Shift the schedule as needed when other things get in the way. Make the program work for you and your life. Lift safe by owning the weight. Use spotter bars.

This continues my experience with Activation. Thoughts on Base here.

Me: O2R (Old, Overweight, Retired), achilles tendonitis, occasional visitations of various joint pains - knee, shoulders, elbows. Oh, and apparently my thumbs are now arthritic. Good times.

Start Light: I used dumbbells (power blocks) and didn’t bother trying to assess what my 1RM might be. Thus, I started

TLDR: The book’s 5 rep increases per week proved a bit much. If you’re O2R (Old, Overweight, Retired) and can’t meet the minimums, use the template, but cut the jog time and reps - maybe double the number of weeks? - and work your way up more gradually. If running or jogging is not an option, substitute with whatever cardio will work - swim, bike, walk. What else are you going to do?

Me: Much weaker and older than the average TB poster on this sub. North of 60, retired, grandfather, traveling quite a bit for family and fun. Just curious. The question is, in an evisceration, is it an "ok" expedient to use water from a canteen to moisten a dressing, or is it strictly saline?

If no saline available, I presume a dry dressing covered with an occlusive dressing?

Thanks!

The best first aid training I ever had was years after I retired from a NOLS WFR course. During my service, 1988-2008, little to no training at all. That includes pre-deployment to Iraq in early 2004.

Kinda pathetic when you think about it.

I know / believe training improved dramatically over GWOT, but what’s it like now?

Would appreciate hearing from all levels, junior enlisted through officer.

I'm looking for a really good, current, home first aid manual. The ACEP First Aid Manual looks good and a new edition is coming out this year. Do any of you ER docs have better recommendations? I sense that ACEP as an organization gives off some negative waves to some of you professionals. Thanks for your time!
